Chapter 4 - The Video

Now the glass table lay broken across the floor.
The documents were buried under glittering shards.
Christopher stood in the doorway with the sealed envelope.
And Dwight, who had expected a frightened bride, was looking at his own future cracking under chandelier light.
Christopher turned toward Jared.
“Before anyone says another word, this room is being recorded.”
Susan stiffened.
“You cannot record in a private home.”
Christopher glanced toward the ceiling.
“I didn’t say by whom.”
That was not true.
Not entirely.
But it worked.
Jared looked up toward the corners of the library.
So did Dwight.
Good.
Let them wonder which of their own security cameras had betrayed them.
Christopher stepped farther into the room.
“Elizabeth, do you need medical attention?”
“I’m standing.”
“That was not my question.”
I swallowed.
My cheek hurt.
My lip stung.
My hands ached from the metal bar.
“Yes,” I said. “After this.”
He nodded.
That was Christopher.
Triage, but legal.
Then he turned to the room.
“The missing account is registered under a Delaware entity controlled by Dwight through a nominee manager. It received a series of transfers from Carroway Development over the past eleven months, including funds traced to the East Harbor project and two charitable pass-throughs falsely attributed to Bancroft partnership discussions.”
Jared’s face hardened.
“That is nonsense.”
Christopher opened the envelope but did not remove the contents fully.
“Would you like me to continue?”
Dwight whispered, “Christopher.”
It was the first time he sounded like himself.
Or maybe the first time he sounded without costume.
Christopher looked at him.
“You used Elizabeth’s name before the marriage to suggest Bancroft support for Carroway’s debt restructuring. You represented to lenders that a strategic alliance was pending. You then planned to use a postnuptial cooperation agreement to pressure Elizabeth into retroactively legitimizing those representations.”
Susan turned to Dwight.
“Is that true?”
Dwight said nothing.
Gemma’s face had gone pale.
She looked at her brother as if a trapdoor had opened under the family floor.
Jared recovered fastest.
Men like him always do.
He pointed at Christopher.
“You walk into my house and accuse my son based on paperwork you won’t even show?”
Christopher’s expression did not change.
“I haven’t reached the video yet.”
Dwight closed his eyes.
There.
That was the moment.
Susan saw it.
Gemma saw it.
Even Jared saw it.
The hidden video was real.
Christopher removed one photograph still from the envelope and placed it face down on the sideboard, keeping the image unreadable from the room.
“Three nights before the wedding, Dwight met with Miles Renner, the Carroway family’s lender liaison. The conversation was captured by Renner’s own office security system after Mr. Renner decided he did not want to be the only witness to fraud.”
Dwight’s voice cracked.
“Miles gave you that?”
“No,” Christopher said. “Miles gave it to federal investigators. They gave us confirmation through proper channels after your name appeared in connection with Elizabeth’s trust.”
Jared stepped forward.
“Federal—”
May you like
Christopher raised one hand.
“Careful.”
