Chapter 5 - Spousal Proximity

The room went still again.

Christopher continued.

“In the video, Dwight explains that the wedding needed to occur before the end of the quarter because marriage would give him ‘spousal proximity’ and create leverage over Elizabeth’s foundation board. He states that Elizabeth is emotionally dependent after her grandmother’s death and unlikely to resist family pressure once isolated inside the Carroway home.”

The words hit me slowly.

Not because I did not understand them.

Because my heart kept trying to reject the image.

Dwight in a room.

Three nights before marrying me.

Describing my grief as leverage.

My grandmother’s death as opportunity.

My love as timing.

I looked at him.

He finally looked back.

“Elizabeth,” he said softly. “It wasn’t like that.”

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because men like Dwight always believe tone can rescue content.

“Then what was it like?”

He looked at Jared.

That was answer enough.

Jared’s face had changed from anger to calculation.

“How much do they know?”

Susan made a sound.

“Jared.”

He ignored her.

“How much?”

Christopher replied, “Enough that you should stop speaking without counsel.”

Jared’s jaw worked.

For once, he obeyed advice.

Gemma backed toward the bookshelf.

“This was about money?”

No one answered her.

She looked at Dwight.

“You married her because of Dad’s loans?”

Dwight flinched.

“Gemma, you don’t understand.”

“No, I think I’m starting to.”

Susan gripped the back of a chair.

“But the foundation. The announcements. The dinners with trustees—”

“Were staged,” I said.

Everyone looked at me.

My voice was quiet.

I was tired suddenly.

Not weak.

Just tired of watching the shape of the lie fill in.

“He wanted trustees to see us as already joined. He wanted Christopher isolated. He wanted me inside this house without a phone and surrounded by people who would call my hesitation disloyal.”

Dwight looked away.

Susan’s face collapsed in a strange way.

Not innocence.

Shock that the performance she helped create had a script she had not fully read.

Jared, however, did not look ashamed.

He looked angry that a tool had failed.

Christopher turned to me.

“Elizabeth, you should leave now.”

Jared snapped, “She is not leaving with foundation documents.”

I looked at him.

“Watch me.”

The words surprised me.

They surprised him too.

Christopher stepped slightly closer to me.

“House security has been notified not to interfere.”

Jared laughed.

“My security?”

Christopher gave him a thin smile.

“Your security vendor has an outside compliance contract with Bancroft. You really should read more carefully before signing service agreements.”

Gemma made a choking sound that might have been a laugh if the morning had been less terrible.

Jared’s face turned dark red.

Dwight whispered, “Dad, stop.”

Finally.

May you like

Too late.

The son warning the father not because I had been hit, but because the money trail was burning.
