Chapter 14 - Robert Held a Reunion Without a Camera

Two years later, Robert hosted another Hale reunion.
Smaller.
Backyard.
No television presentation.
No cameras.
At the invitation he added:
No family archive this year. Please create your own memories.
Luke came.
That mattered.
Nathan came.
Maya Sinclair came only for:
one drink,
then left because it was a family event.
Good boundary.
Diane hosted:
food,
flowers,
nothing else.
Robert noticed how much lighter she seemed when she did not need:
company relevance.
Elena was invited.
She almost declined.
Then accepted.
Not as:
Nathan’s ex-wife.
Not as:
former executive.
Robert wrote personally:
You were family here for eleven years. If you want to come, you are welcome. No obligation.
Elena went.
She arrived with Lauren.
Nathan saw her across the garden.
They nodded.
Later spoke.
“How are you?”
“Good.”
“You?”
“Good.”
Both meant it.
No subtext.
No business.
Then Luke approached holding two beers.
“Should I be worried nobody is recording this?”
Elena laughed.
“I’m taking notes manually.”
He groaned.
They talked for twenty minutes.
Ordinary.
Robert watched from the terrace.
At one point Elena caught him.
He looked away.
Later he said:
“I’m glad you came.”
“So am I.”
Then Robert apologized for something he had not fully owned before.
“I let everyone use my fear of conflict.”
Elena looked at him.
“Diane managed it.”
“Nathan exploited it.”
“You documented it.”
“And I called that leadership.”
He smiled sadly.
“I should have been clearer sooner.”
Elena nodded.
“Probably.”
Then:
“We all should have.”
No one asked:
who started.
That question had lost value.
The reunion ended at nine.
People hugged.
Left.
No footage existed afterward.
Nothing to replay.
Nothing to curate.
The family had to rely on:
memory.
Imperfect.
Human.
May you like
Enough.
