Chapter 8 - Four Years Earlier, Elena Had Used a Family Video Against Someone Else

Nathan’s cousin Luke Hale had once been on the CEO shortlist.
That fact had almost vanished from family memory.
Luke was Robert’s nephew.
Charismatic.
Excellent with guests.
Terrible with limits.
Four years earlier, Luke oversaw:
food and beverage across two properties.
He wanted COO.
Nathan wanted COO.
The board was divided.
Then came Robert’s sixtieth birthday weekend.
Family event at one of the Hale Meridian hotels.
The family archive cameras recorded:
speeches,
games,
dinner.
Late that evening, Luke got into an argument with:
a banquet supervisor.
The video showed Luke:
pointing,
raising his voice,
saying:
“If you worked for me directly, you’d be gone by Monday.”
Elena saw the clip later while editing the family video.
She saved it.
Then brought it to Robert.
“Watch this.”
Robert was disturbed.
Elena argued:
“This is how he behaves when he thinks the board isn’t watching.”
Nathan agreed.
They brought:
three short clips
to the succession committee.
Luke was removed from the COO shortlist.
Nathan got the role.
At the time Elena believed:
correct outcome.
The independent review now pulled the full archive.
Context mattered.
Earlier in the evening, the banquet supervisor had ignored:
a confirmed shellfish-allergy service protocol.
Luke’s anger was inappropriate.
The underlying safety issue was real.
The short clips Elena selected omitted:
the triggering event,
Luke later apologizing,
the supervisor acknowledging the mistake.
Elena had not falsified anything.
She had curated.
For a purpose.
Then another detail.
Luke had asked:
“Why are family videos being used in my employment review?”
Elena answered:
“If someone shows poor judgment when they think it’s private, the board should know.”
Robert had accepted that.
Nathan had benefited.
Diane remembered.
Years later, she used the same logic:
Show everyone who Elena really is.
The difference:
Diane intended to provoke the behavior first.
Still, Elena had helped create the culture.
The company began treating:
family recordings,
personal conduct,
business standing
as connected.
She had opened that door.
Marcia asked:
“Do you believe Luke should have been considered for COO?”
Elena thought.
“Probably not.”
“Do you believe the clips were fair evidence?”
Long pause.
“No.”
There.
Nathan looked at her.
Elena continued:
“I used authentic material selectively because I believed the outcome justified it.”
Luke had been angry.
Nathan had been the stronger candidate.
Elena wanted:
certainty.
So she made the evidence simpler than reality.
That realization hurt because it mirrored exactly what Diane intended to do to her.
Not equally.
But recognizably.
The board invited Luke to submit a statement.
He did.
No lawsuit.
No demand for money.
Just:
I deserved discipline for how I spoke to an employee. I did not deserve to have a family birthday turned into a corporate character test.
Elena read that line three times.
May you like
Then called him.
