Chapter 11 - THE MESSAGE INSIDE THE GLASS DRAWER

Three years after Protocol Icarus saved my life, the black phone rang again.
It was not supposed to ring.
The device sat beneath the conference table in my office at Whitmore Tower, locked inside a glass drawer beside the sealed evidence box containing my wedding ring.
Visible.
Silent.
Dead, according to every system report Elena Ward had signed.
At 11:42 p.m., while rain pressed silver lines against the tower windows, the screen lit from inside the drawer.
No ringtone.
No vibration.
Only one sentence.
DAEDALUS WAS NOT YOUR FATHER’S LAST SYSTEM.
I stared at it until the words blurred.
Across the office, Elena stopped reading the quarterly audit.
“What happened?”
I unlocked the drawer.
The phone showed no network connection, no incoming number, no access record.
Then a second message appeared.
ASK MARA KEENE WHY BELLWETHER CLOSED FILE 9A.
Elena’s face changed.
She knew the name.
Everyone connected to Icarus knew Mara Keene—the insurance investigator whose warning had stopped me from entering the private elevator on the night Harrison and Graham planned my death.
Mara had testified.
Transferred evidence.
Disappeared from public view.
I called her old number.
Disconnected.
Elena opened the secure internal directory.
“Mara left Bellwether fourteen months ago.”
“Why wasn’t I told?”
“She was not our employee.”
“She was part of the evidence chain.”
Elena looked at me.
“That is not the same as owing you her life.”
Fair.
Cruel.
Necessary.
I had spent three years learning that power did not make every unanswered question mine to command.
The phone lit again.
FILE 9A CONTAINS ELIAS WHITMORE’S TRUE CAUSE OF DEATH.
My father had died five months before I activated Icarus.
Heart attack.
Private office.
No struggle.
No scandal.
Graham had arranged the medical review.
Graham, who later admitted planning my death.
My hand tightened around the phone.
Elena stood.
“Do not move.”
“I’m standing in my own office.”
“And someone reached a dead encrypted device inside your locked drawer.”
She touched the security call pad.
The building sealed three executive floors.
Cameras replayed the previous hour.
No entry.
No access.
No visible breach.
Only the phone waking by itself.
Then the office speakers activated.
My father’s recorded voice filled the room.
Not the Daedalus message I already knew.
A different recording.
Older.
More tired.
“Eleanor, if you are hearing this, then someone has found the second wing.”
May you like
The lights went out.
And in the black glass of the windows, I saw a figure standing behind Elena.
