Chapter 29 - THE WOMAN IN THE BUSINESS JOURNAL

Twenty-five years after the attack, the same business journal requested another interview.

The first interviewer had asked whether I still believed in trust.

The new interviewer was younger than June.

She asked:

“Did Protocol Icarus define your life?”

“No.”

“It made you famous.”

“Fame is not definition.”

“It exposed an attempted murder, changed a corporation, and led to a public trust.”

“Yes.”

“So why not define you by it?”

“Because the worst thing someone planned for me is not the largest thing I built afterward.”

She paused.

“What was?”

I looked through the window toward Port Mercy.

June’s safety center.

The worker pier.

Children crossing the plaza.

Daniel reading on a bench.

“The ability to live without organizing every room around danger.”

The interview ran under a photograph of me smiling.

Not tired.

Not invulnerable.

Older.

Calm.

The headline read:

ELEANOR WHITMORE OUTLIVED THE PROTOCOL THAT SAVED HER.

I corrected it in my own archive.

The protocol did not save me.

People did.

Evidence did.

My own decision did.

May you like

The protocol shortened the distance.

Accuracy still mattered.
