Chapter 15 - THE APARTMENT

I kept the apartment.
People assumed I would sell it because too much happened around it.
But the worst night happened at the mansion.
The apartment was different.
It was mine before Jackson.
I refused to let their fraud rewrite that history.
I renovated it.
Changed the kitchen.
Repainted.
Removed the furniture Genesis chose.
Installed shelves Noah designed.
The deed sat in a fireproof safe.
My name.
Only mine.
After Noah and I married, we chose not to add him automatically.
He did not ask.
Years later, I added him as a beneficiary in my will.
Different from title.
Different from control.
We talked about it.
Choice again.
Richard visited once.
He stood by the window.
“Genesis always hated this place.”
“I know.”
“She said it made you think you didn’t need Jackson.”
I laughed softly.
“She was right.”
Richard smiled.
Then grew serious.
“I should have defended you sooner.”
“Yes.”
No argument.
That helped.
We had reached a place where truth did not require performance.
He did not need me to tell him he was a good man.
I did not need him to become my father.
We were simply connected by history and accountability.
Then a package arrived.
No return address.
Inside was the broken porcelain fragment I had dropped on the dinner table.
Evidence release.
Police had returned personal property associated with the case.
I stared at it.
White ceramic.
Gold edge.
Noah asked:
“What do you want to do with it?”
My first instinct was throw it away.
Then I thought about Clear Title.
We had an office wall displaying anonymous objects from cases.
A forged key.
A fake power of attorney.
A canceled check.
Objects that looked ordinary until context changed them.
I donated the fragment.
Plaque:
“Evidence of coercion can look ordinary.”
No names.
No spectacle.
That felt right.
The plate had once been weapon.
Then evidence.
Now education.

Things can change meaning without changing what happened.
That lesson became part of healing too.
