Chapter 8 - THE COST OF TRUTH
Jackson’s cooperation reduced some charges.
Not the assault.
Not everything.
Genesis called him weak.
Richard called him late.
I called him nothing.
I did not need a label.
The divorce moved forward.
Financial discovery revealed Jackson had hidden debt.
Gambling.
Bad investments.
Private loans.
His control over my spending had existed beside his own chaos.
The apartment remained mine.
The forged deed was voided.
My mother’s trust was restored under an independent trustee.
The value was $10.4 million.
I felt almost nothing when I heard the number.
Money attached to violation does not feel like wealth at first.
It feels like evidence.
I left most of it untouched.
Dana recommended a conservative structure.
Independent trustee.
Dual approvals.
No spouse authority by default.
Clear incapacity safeguards.
I agreed.
Then the criminal trial date approached.
Genesis refused a plea.
Her defense attacked every victim.
Confused.
Ungrateful.
Financially unsophisticated.
Vindictive.
Then Helen Ross testified.
Seventy-four years old.
Tiny.
Calm.
Genesis’s lawyer asked:
“Did you sign the document?”
“Yes.”
“So you consented.”
Helen looked at him.
“I signed page nine.”
“What does that mean?”
“The property schedule was page twelve.”
The lawyer paused.
Helen continued.
“Page twelve was not attached when I signed.”
Metadata confirmed it.
The jury understood.
Fraud does not always forge signatures.
Sometimes it changes what signatures mean.
Then Richard testified.
He admitted his own failures.
The defense tried to portray him as vengeful.
He said:
“I am ashamed I made her behavior easier.”
That line landed.
Then Jackson took the stand.
He described growing up with Genesis.
Approval for obedience.
Money for compliance.
Silence as loyalty.
The prosecutor asked:
“Did your upbringing make you smash a plate against Emma’s head?”
Jackson said:
“No.”
That answer mattered.
He did not outsource his hand.
He owned it.
Then Martin Vale’s former paralegal testified.
She had kept an email archive.
One message from Genesis:
Emma is easier than the others. Jackson can make her sign if needed.
My stomach turned.
Then another.
If she refuses, we have the mental report.
And a third.
If Richard interferes, use the loan.
Genesis had planned everyone.
Her husband.
Her son.
Me.
