Chapter 6 - THE TRUTH IN THE METADATA

The room froze.

Ethan looked at him.

“You don’t get a vote.”

Ryan’s face cracked.

Not into remorse yet.

Into panic.

“She’s my wife.”

Ethan stepped closer, not touching him.

“You brought a weapon into the kitchen with your pregnant wife on the floor.”

“I didn’t hit her.”

Sophia flinched.

Ethan’s voice lowered.

“You were close enough for splinters to land beside her hip.”

Vanessa backed toward the doorway.

This time Ethan let her.

Because the sound of another car screeching to a stop outside had reached the kitchen.

Caleb arrived first.

Then Owen.

Caleb entered with his phone in hand, already speaking to emergency services, his face pale beneath controlled fury. Owen came behind him, eyes taking in the broken door, the splintered floor, Sophia on the ground, the stick in the corner, Vanessa near the counter, Ryan breathing hard.

Owen moved toward Ryan.

Caleb caught his arm.

“No.”

Owen shook with the effort to stop.

Ryan looked at the three men now standing between him and Sophia.

Caleb.

Owen.

Ethan.

The brothers Sophia had been taught to treat as interference.

They did not rush Ryan.

Did not punch him.

Did not perform.

They formed a wall.

Caleb crouched beside Sophia.

His voice broke only on her name.

“Soph.”

She tried to smile.

“Hi.”

His eyes moved to her belly.

“Ambulance is coming.”

“I’m scared.”

“I know.”

“I think the baby moved.”

“Good. Keep talking to me.”

Owen stood beside Ethan, fists closed.

Vanessa saw the doorway open behind them and tried to slip out.

Ethan said, “Stay.”

She stopped again, trembling now.

Caleb looked over his shoulder.

“Vanessa Lopez?”

She said nothing.

“Good,” he said. “We’ve been looking for you.”

Ryan looked at Vanessa sharply.

“What does that mean?”

Owen laughed once.

No humor.

“You really let her walk you straight into this with a stick in your hands.”

Ryan’s face reddened.

“She had proof.”

Caleb stood slowly.

“What she had was a packet of forged screenshots, one surveillance photo of Sophia meeting her own brother, and a paternity-test receipt she ordered using your company card.”

Ryan stared.

“No.”

Vanessa whispered, “Ryan—”

Caleb lifted his phone.

“Your office computer synced to the cloud account you gave Sophia access to last year. Vanessa didn’t erase metadata. She moved files like someone who thinks opening Canva makes her a hacker.”

Even through fear, Sophia almost laughed.

Owen muttered, “That insult was for me. I helped.”

Ethan kept his eyes on Ryan.

“You raised a weapon beside a pregnant woman because you didn’t check metadata.”

Ryan looked at Sophia.

Something like horror entered his face.

Finally.

Too late.

“Sophia…”

She turned away.

The ambulance arrived before police.

Sophia insisted on that later when telling the story.

The first people who entered treated her like a patient, not evidence.

They checked her vitals, supported her carefully, asked about pain, movement, dizziness, contractions. She answered as best she could. Her hands would not stop shaking.

Ryan tried to approach once.

Owen blocked him with one step.

“Don’t.”

Ryan stopped.

Vanessa sat in a dining chair now, guarded by her own fear, one hand wrapped around her phone like it might still save her.

It did not.

Caleb asked the paramedics whether Sophia could hold his hand during transfer.

They said yes.

She did.

As they lifted her onto the stretcher, she looked at the damaged floor.

The splintered mark beside where her hip had been.

The stick in the corner.

The broken door.

The phone on the counter.

Her kitchen.

Her home.

No.

Not home.

Not anymore.

At the hospital, the baby’s heartbeat was found quickly.

Strong.

Steady.

A sound like a small horse running through water.

Sophia cried then.

Hard.

Caleb cried too, though he pretended he was coughing until the nurse handed him tissues without comment.

Ethan stood by the wall, arms crossed, face unreadable except for the way his jaw kept flexing.

Owen paced until Sophia threw a pillow at him.
