Chapter 7 - SAFE AT THE HOSPITAL

“Stop,” she said.

He caught it.

“I’m fine.”

“You look like a lawsuit with legs.”

“That’s accurate.”

The doctor recommended monitoring.

No immediate catastrophic injury.

No signs of direct trauma to the abdomen, but the emotional stress and fall required observation. Sophia stayed overnight.

Ryan was not allowed into the room.

Sophia made that choice.

Not Caleb.

Not Owen.

Not Ethan.

Her.

When the nurse asked, “Do you want your husband allowed back?” Sophia closed her eyes.

For a moment, she saw Ryan before Vanessa.

Ryan painting the nursery.

Ryan laughing in the rain.

Ryan with his hand on her belly when they first heard the heartbeat.

Then she saw the stick.

The floor cracking.

His face above her.

You lied about my child.

“No,” she said.

The nurse nodded.

Simple.

No judgment.

“I’ll update security.”

That sentence felt like a door locking.

Ryan texted seventy-three times before midnight.

Sophia read none of them.

Caleb read three and stopped.

Owen read one and nearly threw the phone.

Ethan took it and placed it on airplane mode.

“Evidence later,” he said.

Sophia looked at him.

“You sound like Caleb.”

“I’m worse.”

She smiled faintly.

“I missed you.”

Ethan’s face softened.

“I missed you too.”

“Sorry I disappeared.”

“You were isolated.”

“I participated.”

He did not argue too quickly.

That was why Ethan was sometimes easier than Caleb.

He let painful truth sit without trying to rescue everyone from it.

“You survived,” he said.

“I don’t want that to be my personality.”

“Good. It’s a status update, not a brand.”

She laughed.

Then winced.

He moved toward her.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Liar.”

“Little bit.”

Caleb returned from the hallway then, face set.

Police had arrived at the house. Vanessa had tried to leave. Ryan had claimed the stick strike was “to scare the truth out of her” and immediately seemed to realize the sentence did not help him. The responding officers preserved the scene, took photographs, collected the stick, obtained the forged packet, and separated statements.

Vanessa’s story shifted three times in one hour.

First, she tried to say Sophia had threatened Ryan.

Then that Ryan had discovered “evidence of infidelity.”

Then that she had only tried to prevent Sophia from “making a false call.”

Each version failed against the audio captured by Sophia’s phone and Ethan’s arrival.

Stop her before she calls them.

That line mattered.

Because it showed Vanessa knew outside help would change the room.

By morning, the fuller picture emerged.

Vanessa had been having an affair with Ryan for at least four months.

She had access to his office, his calendar, several passwords, and enough emotional intelligence to know which insecurity to press.

She created fake message screenshots using an old contact name from Sophia’s phone backup. The “D” was pulled from a years-old thread with Ethan, whose last name was Cole. She used a photo of Sophia hugging Owen outside a cafe, cropped it, and attached it as “proof.” She purchased a paternity test kit with Ryan’s company card and presented the receipt as something Sophia had hidden.

She also drafted an email from a fake clinic domain implying Sophia had asked about “discreet prenatal genetic confirmation.”

That email was poorly done.

But Ryan did not want quality evidence.

He wanted permission for rage.

That was the part Sophia struggled with most.

Vanessa lied.

But Ryan chose belief because belief let him punish Sophia for every insecurity he had stored.

Her brothers.

Her independence.

Her pregnancy.

Her questions.

Her refusal to disappear completely.

The legal process separated those truths.

Vanessa was charged with falsifying records, harassment, stalking-related conduct, and conspiracy tied to the domestic incident. Ryan faced charges related to aggravated domestic assault, reckless endangerment, unlawful restraint, and threatening conduct involving a weapon, with enhancements because Sophia was pregnant.

His defense tried to emphasize that the stick did not strike her.
