Chapter 10 - THE FOUNDATION PLEDGE

The Ashford Foundation board was shocked.

Miriam had told them I personally committed five hundred thousand dollars.

No one asked me directly.

Why would they?

She was my mother-in-law.

They trusted her.

That word again.

Trust.

Board minutes said:

Mrs. Sienna Ashford has graciously agreed to underwrite the expansion.

I had attended no meeting.

Signed no pledge knowingly.

Then a donor relations officer found an email.

From my address.

Delighted to support.

Sent from Ashford Manor’s IP address.

I was traveling that day.

Garrick was home.

Miriam too.

Who sent it?

Forensics traced device signature.

Miriam’s tablet.

She had access to my email because I once logged in to print a boarding pass.

Saved password.

Again.

Convenience becoming access.

Then foundation counsel reported the matter.

The pledge was withdrawn.

No one blamed the scholarship program.

They blamed governance.

Good.

Independent board members removed Miriam temporarily.

She called me.

Through counsel.

“You humiliated me.”

I laughed.

No joy.

“You forged my promise.”

“I was going to ask you.”

“After you announced it?”

“You would have said yes.”

There.

Again.

Future assumed consent.

Then:

“And if I said no?”

Silence.

Miriam had no answer.

Because no was the thing she could not tolerate.

Then foundation auditors found something else.

Miriam used charitable-event expenses to cover estate costs.

Flowers.

Catering.

Wine.

Some legitimate overlap.

Some not.

The financial case expanded.

Not because I wanted it.

Because once systems looked, patterns appeared.

Then Owen called.

“We found a transfer that does not fit.”

“How much?”

“Two hundred thousand.”

“To where?”

Pause.

“An account in Garrick’s name.”

My husband had received trust-linked money directly.

And unlike the others, this transfer appeared to carry an electronic approval from me.

We needed to know whether that signature was forged too.
