Chapter 18 - GARRICK’S LETTER

Garrick wrote after two years.

Not immediately.

Good.

The letter was short.

Sienna,

I used to think the worst thing I did was hit you.

It wasn’t.

The worst thing was believing your no was a threat to me.

I stopped.

Then:

Every time you disagreed, I felt the house, the family, and my authority slipping. I used fear to make agreement cheaper than conflict.

That was honest.

Then:

I loved you, but I did not love you safely.

That sentence stayed.

Because people want simple language.

He loved me.

He harmed me.

Both.

Then:

I do not expect forgiveness or contact.

Good.

No emotional invoice.

I did not reply.

Then, six months later, I did.

One line.

I hope you keep learning.

That was all.

No reconciliation.

No friendship.

No visit.

His growth belonged to him.

Mine belonged to me.

Then Miriam wrote too.

Longer.

More defensive.

Then less.

Her third letter contained one sentence that felt real.

I thought the house was proof our family mattered.

Maybe that was the whole tragedy.

She confused symbol with worth.

Property with identity.

Control with preservation.

Then she wrote:

I am sorry I threw wine at your mother.

Interesting.

Specific.

Then:

I am sorry I treated your injury like inconvenience.

Better.

No request for reply.

I did not send one.

Not yet.

May you like

Maybe never.

Boundaries do not need final speeches.
