Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN IN THE BASEMENT

The living woman from the basement was named Anna Reed.

She was thirty-nine.

A former Whitmore accountant.

She disappeared four years earlier after reporting irregular transfers tied to Northfield.

Her family believed she left the country.

The unconscious woman was Laura Bennett, Daniel’s first wife.

He told me she died before we met.

She had been declared dead after a boating accident.

No body.

Only a death certificate.

Signed by Dr. Stephen Cross.

The dead woman in the basement remained unidentified.

Claire moved everyone away from the mansion while forensic teams entered.

Lily and I sat inside the black sedan with Eleanor.

My mother checked Lily’s blanket under the light.

The red writing had been made with a hospital marker.

The date was tomorrow’s date.

Why?

Thomas reviewed the released trust records.

Tomorrow was the deadline for a sealed family court petition.

Daniel had filed to declare me mentally incompetent.

The petition claimed I endangered Lily, fabricated abuse, and demonstrated paranoid beliefs about hidden wealth.

Supporting physician:

Dr. Stephen Cross.

Supporting witnesses:

Margaret Whitmore.

Vanessa Collins.

Proposed temporary guardian for Lily:

Daniel Whitmore.

If approved, Daniel could control my medical care, Lily’s custody, and my trust signature.

The blanket message was part of the same operation.

They planned to claim I wrote it during a breakdown.

Then Laura Bennett woke at the hospital.

She asked for me.

I did not want to go.

I went anyway.

Laura looked thin and gray beneath the hospital blankets.

Her left wrist carried years of restraint scars.

She studied my face.

“You married him.”

“Yes.”

“Did he tell you I died?”

“Yes.”

“He told me you were unstable.”

The room narrowed.

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

Daniel had visited Laura in the basement during our marriage.

He showed her photographs of me and Lily.

He said I was mentally ill and dangerous.

He claimed he kept Laura hidden because I threatened to hurt her if she returned.

He built separate stories for each woman.

Each story made the other woman the danger.

Laura told me she discovered Daniel’s Northfield payments ten years earlier.

When she confronted him, Margaret arranged an emergency psychiatric hold.

Cross diagnosed her after one interview.

Daniel obtained guardianship.

Then moved her through private facilities until the mansion basement was renovated.

Why keep her alive?

Her signature controlled waterfront property Daniel used as collateral.

Dead, the property passed to Laura’s sister.

Alive and “incompetent,” Daniel managed it.

Then Laura mentioned the dead woman.

“Her name was Rachel Moore.”

The nurse from Northfield who helped Thomas escape six months earlier.

Rachel copied evidence.

She moved Thomas to a safe apartment.

Then contacted Eleanor.

Before she could testify, someone caught her inside the mansion.

Vanessa knew Rachel was there.

She thought Rachel was a blackmailer.

Margaret ordered her confined.

Daniel claimed he would release her after the trust documents were signed.

Rachel died from an untreated head injury.

I looked toward Vanessa through the glass wall of the interview room.

She was speaking with police.

Elegant dress gone.

Hospital blanket around her shoulders.

Fear replacing arrogance.

She saw me.

Then lowered her eyes.

Laura reached for my hand.

“Daniel never wanted wives.”

“What did he want?”

“Signatures.”

Then Claire entered.

She carried Lily’s preliminary DNA report.

Daniel was not her biological father.

My breath stopped.

“That’s impossible.”

The fertility clinic used Daniel’s sample during treatment.

At least, that was what we were told.

Claire placed another report beside it.

Lily was biologically related to Thomas.

Of course she was.

He was my father.

But the paternal line matched someone else in the Sterling family network.

A man named Marcus Vale.

My mother’s younger brother.

My uncle.

I felt sick.

I had never slept with Marcus.

I had met him only twice.

Then Thomas explained.

The embryo implanted during fertility treatment was created with my egg and sperm listed under Daniel’s name.

The clinic record had been altered.

The sample actually came from Marcus.

Why?

Because the Sterling trust recognized maternal descendants but required a male family co-signature for certain inheritance transfers.

A child with both Sterling maternal and Vale male lineage would become the strongest possible claimant.

Daniel and Margaret had engineered Lily as a trust key.

They did not need Daniel’s blood.

They needed mine.

Then my encrypted phone rang.

Unknown secure number.

A man whispered:

“Claire, if Thomas is with you, he is still lying.”

“Who is this?”

“Marcus.”

I looked at my father.

Marcus continued:

“I never donated anything.”

The line crackled.

“The child was made from frozen material taken from me after surgery.”

My daughter had been conceived through theft from both sides.

Then Marcus said:

“And if the date on the blanket is tomorrow, they are not trying to take Lily.”

May you like

“What are they trying to do?”

“Replace her.”
