Chapter 3 - THE DOCTOR WHO NEVER EXAMINED HER
Dr. Alan Reeves certified that Emma suffered from acute stress-induced delusional episodes.
He had never examined her.
He had met her twice at charity functions.
The report claimed she became paranoid under financial pressure, misremembered conversations, and displayed impulsive aggression.
The date on the report was three weeks before Lily's attack.
The attached evaluation contained answers Emma never gave. It also included a forged signature copied from a consent form Emma signed during Lily's annual physical.
Marcus's plan was becoming clear.
Create a medical crisis.
Pressure Emma to sign.
If she refused, provoke a confrontation.
Use the confrontation to prove instability.
Replace her as trustee.
Transfer Lily's assets anyway.
The slap in the ICU had not merely angered him. It had given him footage.
But Marcus did not anticipate the recording.
He also did not anticipate the hospital camera showing him grabbing Emma first.
Rachel filed an emergency action in family court.
The judge temporarily barred Marcus from contacting Emma or Lily. He was also prohibited from exercising any authority over the trust.
Marcus responded through attorneys. He claimed Emma had manipulated the recording. He claimed Richard's consent proved legitimate concern. He produced the psychiatric report.
Then Rachel introduced Dr. Reeves's travel records.
On the day he claimed to have evaluated Emma in New York, he had been speaking at a conference in Singapore.
The report was impossible.
Federal agents arrested Reeves at JFK.
Owen Pike remained missing.
NexaCore's internal investigators discovered payments from a shell company called Blue Meridian Consulting to Dr. Reeves. The shell company also paid the charity event medical vendor.
It was controlled by a trust in Delaware.
The trustee was Owen's sister.
Emma sat beside Lily when Rachel delivered the news.
"So Owen did it?"
"Owen moved the money."
"That is not the same as ordering it."
"No."
The next morning, Marcus gave an interview from the steps of his attorney's office. He called the crisis a coordinated attack by parties seeking control of NexaCore.
He said his priority was protecting shareholders.
Emma watched the clip without sound.
Marcus's face was calm. His tie was perfect. He looked like the man millions admired.
The same man who had said he would let their daughter choke.
Lily opened her eyes that afternoon.
Only for a few seconds.
Emma leaned close. "Hi, baby."
Lily's eyelids fluttered. Her fingers moved weakly against Emma's palm.
"Mom?"
"I'm here."
"Daddy mad?"
Emma's heart broke quietly.
"No, sweetheart. You are safe."
Lily looked frightened.
"He said I had to be brave so you would sign."
Emma froze.
"What did Daddy say?"
The nurse stepped closer, but Emma raised one hand.
Lily's voice was barely audible.
"At the party. He said if I got sick, you would fix everything."
Emma looked at Rachel.
Rachel's face changed.
"Did Daddy give you your inhaler?"
Lily's eyes closed again. Her breathing remained steady.
The doctor asked Emma to stop questioning her. They needed a trained child interviewer.
But the sentence was enough.
Marcus had spoken to Lily before the attack.
A forensic search of Lily's tablet uncovered deleted voice messages.
One from Marcus.
"Remember, princess, if you feel tight in your chest, tell Mommy you need the silver inhaler. Everything will be okay."
Why specify the silver inhaler?
Lily owned two.
The silver one had been altered.
The red one, kept in the hotel suite, worked normally.
Rachel played the message twice.
Emma stood beside the window.
"I slept next to him."
Rachel said nothing.
"I trusted him with her."
"You trusted your husband."
"I defended him."
"You did not know."
"I ignored things."
"That is different."
"Is it?"
Emma thought of the years.
Marcus deciding which friends were good for her. Marcus reviewing every purchase over ten thousand dollars. Marcus insisting Lily attend events even when tired. Marcus telling Emma that privacy was loyalty.
Control had arrived disguised as competence.
A federal grand jury subpoenaed NexaCore records.
The board discovered Marcus had used company cybersecurity employees to monitor Emma's email and cloud backups. He had read messages between Emma and Rachel. He knew she was considering separation.
Then investigators found a file on a private server.
PROJECT ORCHID.
Inside were photographs of Emma entering a therapist's office.
Copies of prescriptions.
Edited audio clips.
Draft headlines.
UNSTABLE BILLIONAIRE WIFE ENDANGERS CHILD.
The campaign had been prepared before Lily entered the hospital.
