Chapter 5 - HER FATHER'S SECOND BETRAYAL

Richard swore he did not erase anything.

He surrendered his phone immediately.

A cybersecurity team confirmed the deletion command came through his device, but it had been triggered remotely.

Someone installed surveillance software during Richard's meeting with Owen Pike outside the bank.

Owen had asked to review the trust consent documents. Richard handed over his phone to scan them.

That was all it took.

The spyware gave Owen access to messages, authentication codes, and cloud credentials.

Richard had unknowingly become a door into Emma's life.

Again.

"I am sorry" no longer sounded large enough.

Emma met him in the hospital family room.

"I should have trusted you," he said.

"Yes."

"I thought I was preventing a scandal."

"You helped create one."

"I know."

"No. You know now. Before, you knew Marcus wanted access to Lily's trust and still signed."

Richard lowered his head.

Emma continued.

"You believed he understood business better than I did."

"Yes."

"You believed grief made me weak."

"Yes."

"You believed protecting the family mattered more than asking me."

"Yes."

The repeated admissions hurt more than excuses would have.

Richard wiped his eyes.

"I do not expect forgiveness."

"Good."

He flinched.

Emma did not soften the truth.

Forgiveness was not an emergency service owed to people once they became uncomfortable with what they had done.

Richard agreed to testify.

He also resigned as trust protector and requested an independent replacement.

It was the first useful action he took without asking Emma to make him feel better.

Lily improved slowly.

She came off the ventilator on the ninth day.

Her first clear sentence was, "Can I go home?"

Emma smiled through tears.

"Soon."

"Is Daddy coming?"

"Not right now."

"Is he in trouble?"

"Adults are asking him questions about decisions he made."

Lily thought about that.

"Did he make bad decisions?"

"Yes."

"Because of me?"

"No."

Emma leaned closer.

"Nothing he did is because of you."

Lily nodded, but fear remained in her eyes.

A child psychologist began working with her.

During one session, Lily drew the charity dinner.

A table. A blue dress. A silver inhaler. And a man standing near the service hallway.

The man had a red tie.

Owen Pike wore a red tie that night.

Lily said he told her the inhaler was special medicine from Daddy.

Federal agents released the drawing to no one.

Three hours later, a gossip site published it.

Someone inside the investigation was leaking evidence to Marcus's media team.

The leak was designed to discredit Lily before formal questioning.

Commentators called the drawing unreliable. Anonymous sources described Emma as coaching her daughter.

Rachel demanded an internal investigation.

The FBI traced the leak to a contractor working for the U.S. Attorney's office. The contractor had received cryptocurrency through Blue Meridian.

Marcus's network reached farther than anyone understood.

Then Owen contacted Emma directly.

"I can prove Marcus ordered everything."

Emma activated the recorder Rachel installed.

"Where are you?"

"Safe."

"Why should I trust you?"

"You shouldn't."

"What do you want?"

"Immunity."

"That is not mine to give."

"You can influence the prosecutor."

"No."

"I have the original messages."

"Send them."

"I need protection first."

"You gave a child an empty inhaler."

Silence.

"I did not know she could die."

"You knew she could stop breathing."

"Marcus said doctors were already there."

"You believed him because he paid you."

Owen's voice tightened.

"Do you want the evidence or not?"

"Yes."

"Then meet me alone."

"No."

"He is watching the FBI."

"Then send it to Rachel."

"I only trust you."

"You helped turn my daughter into leverage. You do not get to use trust as a condition."

The call ended.

Rachel traced it to a bus terminal in Baltimore.

Agents arrived twelve minutes later.

Owen was gone.

But he left a locker key.

Inside the locker was a laptop, a paper ledger, and a child's blue hair ribbon.

The ribbon belonged to Lily.

Wrapped around it was a note.

MARCUS HAS SOMEONE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE.
