Chapter 1 - The Men Victor Never Expected to See at Lily’s Birthday

The cake hit Lily before Sarah could reach her.
One second, the eight-year-old was standing beside the long birthday table in her pale-blue dress, both hands nervously folded in front of her. The next, Victor had grabbed the soft frosted cake with both hands and hurled it straight into her face.
Frosting exploded across Lily’s cheeks, hair and the front of her dress.
She gasped.
Then she started crying.
Victor looked down at her without a trace of remorse.
“Cry louder, brat. Maybe someone will pity you enough to pretend you matter.”
Sarah was already running.
The private-school fundraiser had been built around Lily’s eighth birthday because Victor insisted combining the events would “give donors something warm to remember.” The large hall had been filled with families and supporters earlier that afternoon, but the formal program had ended. Staff had moved the remaining guests into the garden reception area, leaving the main dining room almost empty.
That was why Victor apparently believed he could finally stop pretending.
Sarah reached him and slapped him across the cheek.
The sound cracked through the hall.
Victor staggered sideways and crashed backward into the food-and-drink table.
Plates clattered.
Cups tipped.
Punch and sauce spilled across the linen and onto the floor.
Sarah immediately moved between him and Lily.
“Mom,” Lily cried.
Sarah extended one arm behind her.
“Stay with me.”
Victor pushed himself away from the destroyed table.
His shock transformed into rage.
“You hit me for that useless little burden?” he spat. “I’d throw her out before I’d ruin another dinner over her.”
Sarah pulled Lily directly behind her.
“Take one more step and find out.”
Victor’s jaw tightened.
He started toward her.
Not walking.
Charging.
Sarah did not move.
Lily suddenly stopped crying loudly enough to look past him.
Her expression changed.
“Mom… behind him.”
Victor slowed.
He turned his head.
The main doors opened.
Two men in dark suits entered.
Neither looked toward Lily.
Neither looked toward Sarah.
They walked directly toward Victor.
His anger disappeared.
“Who the hell did you drag into my house?”
Sarah said nothing.
Because she had not brought them.
Victor apparently realized that at the same moment.
He took one step backward.
Then another.
The two men separated as they reached him, one moving to either side.
Victor’s voice changed.
“Wait.”
They took hold of his arms.
Firmly.
Professionally.
Victor jerked once.
They held him in place.
Sarah pulled Lily against her side and wiped frosting away from one of her eyes.
Victor stared at Sarah.
For the first time in their four-year marriage, she saw genuine terror on his face.
“What did you do?”
Sarah looked at him.
“I didn’t do anything.”
One of the men identified himself quietly.
“Special Agent Michael Reeves.”
The second did the same.
Victor’s face went white before either man named the agency.
Then Agent Reeves reached into his jacket and produced a folded document.
Not for Sarah.
For Victor.
“We have a federal arrest warrant.”
Victor stopped struggling.
Sarah stared.
She had known investigators were asking questions.
She had not known a warrant existed.
Victor looked toward the doorway as if expecting someone to come save him.
Nobody did.
Then Lily tugged Sarah’s hand.
“Mom?”
Sarah bent toward her.
“What?”
Lily whispered through tears and frosting, “Is this because of the scholarship money?”
Victor heard her.
His entire body went still.
Sarah looked down at her daughter.
“What scholarship money?”
Victor immediately snapped, “Lily, shut up.”
Agent Reeves tightened his hold.
Sarah’s eyes moved back to her husband.
The agents had not arrived because Victor threw a cake.
They had already been coming.
May you like
And somehow her eight-year-old daughter knew enough about the reason to frighten him.
