Chapter 1 - The Punch Everyone Saw

Claire Bennett had both hands twisted into the front of her father’s charcoal suit.

“Dad… don’t let him take me.”

Robert Bennett tightened one arm around his daughter.

Her blonde hair had come loose around her face. One small scratch crossed her cheek. Another marked her forearm. Her ivory off-shoulder dress was wrinkled and partly torn near one strap.

Around them, the lakeside wedding pavilion had gone unnaturally quiet.

Champagne glasses remained suspended halfway to mouths. Guests stood between white floral arrangements and pale oak tables, pretending not to stare while staring anyway.

Then Jason Cole appeared.

Claire immediately pressed closer to Robert.

Jason walked directly through the guests toward them.

Navy suit.

Perfect tie.

No panic.

No concern when he saw Claire crying.

He stopped several feet from Robert.

“MOVE. SHE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SHE DISOBEYS ME.”

Claire recoiled.

Robert slowly turned toward his son-in-law while keeping himself between Jason and Claire.

“You did this to my daughter?”

Jason looked at the scratches on Claire’s face.

No remorse.

“She needed to learn her damn place.”

Robert stepped forward.

One punch.

Fast.

Hard.

Directly across Jason’s face.

Jason flew backward and hit the pale oak floor.

Guests gasped.

Someone dropped a champagne glass.

Jason remained down, stunned, one hand braced against the floor.

Robert did not hit him again.

Claire stayed safely beside her father.

Robert stood over Jason.

“Touch my daughter again and you’ll never get near her again.”

Jason stared up at him.

Then something unexpected happened.

He smiled.

Not because he was unhurt.

Because he believed Robert had just made a mistake.

“You think this is about your daughter?”

Robert’s expression hardened.

Jason looked past him toward Claire.

“You should ask her what she took from my laptop.”

Claire stopped crying.

Robert slowly turned toward her.

“What is he talking about?”

Claire reached into the torn side of her dress and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

“I found this twenty minutes ago.”

Robert took it.

At the top was the name of the family company he had spent thirty-five years building:

BENNETT LAKESHORE GROUP

Beneath it:

CONFIDENTIAL BOARD CONDUCT SUMMARY — CLAIRE BENNETT

Robert looked at his daughter.

Then at Jason.

Claire whispered:

“He’s been building a case to get me removed.”

And suddenly the confrontation in the wedding pavilion was no longer only about a marriage.
