Chapter 4 - THE FIRE ALARM
David stepped into the suite with Teresa behind him.
Two private security men blocked the elevator.
The fire alarm continued.
Rachel stood between Eleanor and the door.
David held up the divorce petition.
“You embarrassed me.”
Eleanor looked at the paper.
“You stole it from hotel security.”
“I took what belongs to me.”
“It is addressed to you. That is not ownership.”
Teresa looked at Charles.
“You came here.”
He said nothing.
She saw the flash drive in Rachel’s hand.
Her face changed.
“Give me that.”
Rachel slipped it into her jacket.
“No.”
Teresa motioned to the security men.
They did not move.
The taller one checked his phone.
“Mrs. Mercer, our payment account was suspended.”
Teresa stared at him.
David cursed.
The freeze had reached private security.
Rachel calmly dialed emergency services.
David moved toward Eleanor.
“You think frozen cards change anything?”
“They changed your travel plans.”
His jaw tightened.
Teresa stepped closer.
“You do not understand what happens when Mercer Development fails.”
Eleanor met her gaze.
“You mean what happens when everyone sees it already failed.”
“You arrogant little girl.”
“Your son married me six weeks ago to steal from my family.”
“He married you because we gave you status.”
Eleanor smiled faintly.
“That is what you told yourself.”
David held up the divorce papers.
“You are not leaving this marriage.”
Rachel answered.
“She already filed.”
“Then we withdraw it.”
“You cannot.”
“I am her husband.”
Eleanor’s voice was quiet.
“That sentence has been doing too much work for you.”
Police sirens approached outside.
The fire alarm stopped abruptly.
Hotel security restored the monitors.
The service corridor showed no fire.
Someone had pulled the alarm and disabled cameras for ninety seconds.
Enough time to reach the suite.
Rachel looked at Teresa.
“Tampering with emergency systems is a crime.”
Teresa laughed.
“Prove I did it.”
The private elevator camera came back online.
It had recorded her using a keycard from the hotel’s event director.
The event director had received a six-figure payment from Mercer Development that morning.
David saw the screen.
Then looked at his mother.
“You said the cameras were down.”
“They were supposed to be.”
The sentence was captured on Rachel’s phone.
For the first time, Teresa appeared uncertain.
Police entered the suite.
David raised his hands.
Teresa did not.
She pointed at Eleanor.
“She assaulted my son.”
Officer Leah Benton looked at the wedding footage already forwarded by hotel security.
“It shows him grabbing her first.”
David said, “She kicked me.”
Benton answered, “You are welcome to make a statement.”
Rachel handed over the stolen divorce petition and the flash drive.
Charles stepped forward.
“I need to make one too.”
Teresa turned on him.
“You weak, miserable man.”
Charles looked at her.
“You built your power from everyone’s silence.”
She stepped toward him.
“And you enjoyed every dollar.”
“Yes.”
The answer stopped her.
He continued.
“I did. That is why I am going to tell them everything.”
David looked at his father.
“You would destroy the family?”
Charles answered, “There is nothing left to destroy.”
Police separated them.
David was not arrested immediately.
Neither was Teresa.
The evidence required review.
But both were ordered to remain in the hotel until interviews were completed.
Eleanor left through a private exit.
Outside, reporters had already gathered.
Someone leaked the ballroom footage.
The bride kicking the groom.
The frozen accounts.
The divorce papers.
Online headlines appeared before midnight.

Medical appointments.
Financial habits.
A risk assessment.
At the bottom was a document dated three months earlier.
CONTINGENCY PLAN IF ELEANOR REFUSES AUTHORIZATION.
The plan did not involve divorce.
It involved discrediting her.
