Chapter 9 - THE FIRST WIFE

Vanessa had signed the certificate in a private chapel four years earlier.
She believed it was a ceremonial commitment.
David told her the legal filing would happen later.
The officiant was Luke.
The witnesses were Teresa and Charles.
The certificate was never filed with the state.
But Teresa now claimed a confidential marriage existed under another jurisdiction.
The argument was weak.
Its purpose was delay.
Confusion.
Pressure.
The same pattern again.
Luke testified that he staged the ceremony to calm Vanessa.
Charles admitted witnessing it.
Teresa admitted arranging it.
David denied believing it was legal.
The judge ruled no valid marriage existed.
Eleanor remained his lawful spouse.
Vanessa remained a victim of deception.
The ruling destroyed Teresa’s strategy and created new evidence of long-term fraud.
At trial, prosecutors began with the wedding reception.
Not the kick.
The phone.
Eleanor pressing the final confirmation.
Accounts freezing.
The suitcases in the garage.
The passports.
Then the story moved backward through the records.
The secret child.
The Lisbon lease.
The forged transfers.
The yacht plan.
The trust amendment.
The leverage files.
Witness after witness showed a system designed to use relationships as financial tools.
Charles testified against his wife and son.
“I stayed because I was afraid.”
The prosecutor asked, “Did fear prevent you from benefiting?”
“No.”
“Did fear prevent you from helping?”
“No.”
“Then what does fear explain?”
“My weakness.”
It was the most honest thing he had said.
Vanessa testified next.
David’s attorney attacked her credibility.
“You accepted millions from Mercer companies.”
“I accepted housing and support David controlled.”
“You planned to leave with him.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted Eleanor’s marriage to fail.”
“I believed it was fake.”
“You loved David.”
“Yes.”
“So now you punish him because he chose Eleanor?”
Vanessa looked toward the jury.
“He did not choose either of us. He chose control.”
Eleanor testified on day eight.
The prosecutor asked why she froze the accounts during the reception.
“Because forty-seven million dollars was scheduled to move that night.”
“Why confront David publicly?”
“I did not plan the confrontation.”
“Why not wait?”
“Because he reached for me after I told him I knew.”
“Did you kick him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He grabbed me and moved toward me again.”
“Did you intend to humiliate him?”
“No.”
“What did you intend?”
“To create distance.”
David’s attorney approached.
“You could have left quietly.”
“I tried.”
“You could have filed privately.”
“I did.”
“You could have frozen accounts without a public scene.”
“I froze them after he stopped me.”
“You enjoyed watching his cards fail, did you not?”
“No.”
“You told him good luck paying for his new life.”
“Yes.”
“That sounds vindictive.”
“It was angry.”
“So you were angry.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted revenge.”
“No.”
“How can the jury know the difference?”
Eleanor looked at him.
“Revenge spends evidence. I preserved it.”
The attorney paused.
He displayed photographs from the wedding.
Eleanor smiling.
David kissing her forehead.
Guests applauding.
“You looked happy.”
“I was performing what I believed was real.”
“You wore the dress.”
“Yes.”
“You hosted the reception.”
“Yes.”
“You thanked guests.”
“Yes.”
“You expect this jury to believe all of that concealed fraud?”
Eleanor looked toward Teresa.
Then David.
“No. I expect the documents to prove it.”
The documents did.
David testified against advice.
He blamed Teresa.
He said she planned the transfers.
He said Luke drafted the amendment.
He said Charles handled the yacht.
He said Vanessa invented promises.
He said Eleanor knew the company needed her money.
Then the prosecutor showed a voice message David sent Teresa the morning of the wedding.
Tonight she signs.
Tomorrow we leave.
If she resists, use the honeymoon plan.
David stopped speaking.
The jury heard the message twice.
Teresa stared at her son.
Not shocked.
Betrayed.
May you like
He had just allowed her to take the blame for a plan he described in his own voice.
The family finally turned completely against itself.
