Chapter 4 - THE CLINIC IN THE SNOW

The decommissioned clinic sat twelve miles inside the Cascades.

The road had not been plowed.

Federal agents joined the operation because the basement records suggested interstate trafficking and medical fraud.

Mason led the Portland team.

Ethan remained at the hospital until Dr. Reed said Julian was stable enough for another surgery.

Then he made a decision she hated.

“You can’t go,” she said.

“I can.”

“You are not law enforcement.”

“I know the building design.”

“How?”

“Rachel sent me a photograph years ago.”

He found it in an old cloud account after hearing her voice.

A vacation photo.

Rachel smiling in snow.

Behind her, partially hidden by trees, stood the clinic.

At the time she said it belonged to a family friend.

Now he understood it was a warning disguised as a memory.

Mason reluctantly allowed Ethan to accompany them as a civilian consultant.

The team reached the clinic at dusk.

The generator was running.

The green door stood open.

Inside, they found blood.

A broken syringe.

One of Donna’s expensive scarves.

The lower level had six rooms.

Five were empty.

The sixth held Peter.

He was tied to a chair.

His left hand was broken.

Mason cut him free.

“Where is Rachel?”

Peter shook uncontrollably.

“Cole took her.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“You called us.”

“I wanted out.”

“Then help.”

Peter looked at Ethan.

“Your wife kept copies.”

“Of what?”

“Everything.”

Donna’s foundation had accepted children from wealthy families who wanted problems hidden.

Some children were abused at home.

Some witnessed crimes.

Some inherited money.

Donna used treatment as leverage.

She controlled parents through records and children through fear.

Rachel discovered it while working for the foundation’s legal office.

“She tried to expose Mom,” Peter said. “Mom arranged the boat.”

Ethan’s voice was low.

“How did Rachel survive?”

“Cole warned her.”

Ethan stared.

“The quiet brother.”

“He loved her.”

Not romantically.

As a sister.

Cole helped Rachel escape the staged accident but Donna found her weeks later.

Instead of killing her, Donna kept her alive because Rachel had hidden a master archive.

For five years, Donna moved her between properties and forced her to reveal locations.

Rachel refused.

Julian eventually saw her by accident.

That triggered the recent violence.

Mason asked, “Why did Cole take her now?”

Peter looked toward the hallway.

“To trade her.”

“For what?”

“The recorder.”

Ethan felt cold.

Donna knew Julian had recorded them.

She believed the device contained something more damaging than the basement files.

“What is on it?” Ethan asked.

Peter shook his head.

“Rachel recorded Mom talking to the senator.”

“Which senator?”

Peter looked at Mason.

“Elias Vane.”

Senator Vane had built his career on child protection legislation.

He chaired the committee overseeing private youth facilities.

His name appeared in dozens of photographs with Donna.

Mason’s jaw tightened.

A radio call came from outside.

A vehicle was approaching.

The tactical team took positions.

An SUV stopped thirty yards away.

Cole stepped out with his hands raised.

Rachel was in the passenger seat.

Alive.

Ethan moved before Mason could stop him.

Rachel opened the door.

She looked thinner.

Older.

A scar crossed her forehead.

But she was alive.

Ethan reached her.

For one second they only stared.

Five years stood between them.

Then Rachel collapsed into his arms.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

He held her carefully.

“You’re here.”

Cole remained near the SUV.

Mason approached him.

“Why bring her back?”

“Because Peter told me Julian was alive.”

“Were you involved in hurting him?”

“No.”

“Did you help conceal Rachel?”

“Yes.”

“Did you help your mother?”

Cole looked at Rachel.

“For too long.”

Agents searched the vehicle.

They found medical supplies, cash, passports, and a laptop.

No recorder.

Rachel touched Ethan’s jacket.

“The one in your bag is not the only one.”

He looked at her.

“There are three.”

She had placed recorders over several years.

One captured Donna and Senator Vane discussing payments.

One captured Dr. Crowe admitting he falsified Julian’s medical records.

The third—the one Julian hid—contained something worse.

“What?”

Rachel looked toward Cole.

May you like

Cole closed his eyes.

Rachel said, “Your son recorded the night they chose which child would die.”
