Chapter 6 - THE BROTHER BORN IN SECRET

Rachel closed her eyes when Ethan asked.

That was answer enough.

They sat in a secure consultation room.

Julian remained asleep after surgery.

Mason stood near the door.

“Tell me,” Ethan said.

Rachel’s hands trembled.

Nine years earlier, before the boating incident, Rachel became pregnant with twins.

One heartbeat disappeared during the second trimester.

At least, that was what Dr. Crowe told her.

She delivered Julian after a difficult labor.

Crowe said the second baby had been absorbed.

There was no body.

No certificate.

No reason to question him.

Years later, while reviewing foundation records, Rachel found an intake page dated the day Julian was born.

Male infant.

No legal identity.

Transferred to Room Six.

“I thought it was someone else,” she said. “Then I saw Donna’s signature.”

Ethan struggled to remain still.

“You knew before you disappeared?”

“Three days before.”

“And you did not tell me?”

“I was trying to get proof.”

“You should have told me.”

“I was afraid you would confront her.”

“I would have.”

“And she would have killed you.”

Silence.

Mason understood too well.

Fear had shaped every delayed truth in the room.

Rachel continued.

The twin was named Gabriel on an internal clinic form.

Donna placed him with a family tied to Senator Vane.

Why?

Because Vane’s daughter had delivered a stillborn child the same week.

Donna replaced the dead infant with Gabriel.

The Vane family believed the child was biologically theirs.

Or claimed to.

The boy was now nine.

His legal name was Michael Vane.

Senator Vane’s grandson.

Ethan stared through the glass toward Julian.

Two sons.

One raised in his home.

One raised inside the family that helped conceal him.

Federal agents moved to secure Michael.

The Vane estate was empty.

Private security footage had been erased.

A helicopter left two hours earlier.

Flight records listed a destination in Montana.

The aircraft vanished from tracking near the Idaho border.

Senator Vane appeared on television that evening.

He denied all allegations.

He called Rachel mentally unstable.

He accused Ethan of manipulating an injured woman.

He said Donna’s foundation had saved thousands of children.

Then he announced Michael had been kidnapped by unknown extremists.

The public story shifted instantly.

News channels showed Ethan’s military photograph.

Anonymous sources described him as former Black Ops.

Vane implied Ethan abducted the child after becoming delusional.

Ethan became a suspect in his own son’s disappearance.

Mason warned him.

“They may issue a warrant.”

“Based on what?”

“Vane controls people.”

“Then arrest Vane.”

“We need Michael alive first.”

Rachel found another clue in the copied archive.

A property known as Eagle Ridge.

Officially a wilderness therapy retreat.

Unofficially a transfer point for Room Six children.

The coordinates led to northern Idaho.

Mason assembled a federal team.

Ethan was ordered to remain in Oregon.

He refused.

Rachel said, “You cannot go.”

“He is my son.”

“So is Julian.”

The words stopped him.

Julian woke later that night.

Ethan told him carefully.

“You may have a brother.”

Julian stared.

“Is he hurt?”

“We don’t know.”

“Does Grandma have him?”

“Maybe.”

Julian looked toward Rachel.

“Mom knew?”

Rachel began crying.

“I was trying to bring him home.”

Julian turned his face away.

The pain was quiet.

More devastating than anger.

Ethan sat beside him.

“You do not have to forgive anyone tonight.”

Julian looked at him.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Would you have come?”

“Yes.”

The answer came without hesitation.

Julian nodded once.

Then he held out his hand.

Ethan took it.

At dawn, Mason called from Idaho.

Eagle Ridge was abandoned.

They found children’s beds.

Medical restraints.

Burned files.

No Michael.

But one security image remained.

Senator Vane entered the property three days earlier.

Donna’s missing son Cole followed.

And behind them walked Dr. Evelyn Reed.

Ethan looked up.

Julian’s doctor.
