Chapter 19 - THE ABDUCTION OF JULIAN BLACKWELL

Julian had been transported to a prison hospital for a scheduled procedure.
The ambulance crew used legitimate credentials.
The vehicle did not.
By the time federal marshals discovered the substitution, Julian was already at an unknown location.
Marlow’s message demanded the bouquet remote and the original memory chip.
Rachel asked why.
The chip had already been copied.
Cross knew that.
Natalie examined the casing again.
Daniel found a thin metallic strip beneath the circuit board.
Not storage.
A physical key.
Julian remembered the remote because Victoria had used it to open something.
The Blackwell family did not trust digital passwords alone.
The remote’s hidden strip likely unlocked a secure archive.
Marlow wanted access.
Julian was leverage.
Ruth asked the question no one else wanted to ask.
“Are you going to save him?”
Natalie looked at the screen.
Julian had controlled her.
Threatened her parents.
Participated in fraud.
He had also testified, exposed Victoria, and accepted prison.
Justice did not require affection.
It required refusing to let Cross decide who deserved rescue.
“Yes.”
Reed prepared a counterfeit remote.
Natalie insisted on carrying the real metallic strip separately.
They traced Marlow’s broadcast through a chain of care facilities.
The source moved every fifteen minutes.
A mobile clinical unit.
Golden Crest operated specialized transport buses for dementia patients.
One bus had disappeared from fleet tracking.
Claire knew the route system.
The buses used private rest stops owned by Meridian.
Daniel overlaid the stops with Blackwell legacy properties.
One site matched.
A closed rehabilitation center near Lake Cachuma.
Federal teams surrounded the property.
Natalie entered with the counterfeit remote.
Inside, the old rehabilitation gym had been converted into a recording studio.
Julian sat beneath lights.
An IV ran into his arm.
Marlow stood beside him.
Adrian Cross watched from behind glass.
“You came,” Marlow said.
“You keep sounding surprised.”
“I am studying consistency.”
Julian lifted his head.
His pupils were unfocused.
“Natalie?”
“I’m here.”
Marlow held up a prepared confession.
Julian had been forced to state that he alone created Heritage Recovery, ordered Victor Kane’s violence, and manipulated Victoria.
The recording would support Cross’s claim that the entire Blackwell system was a family crime unrelated to Meridian.
“Give me the remote,” Marlow said.
Natalie placed the counterfeit on the table.
He scanned it.
A red light flashed.
“False.”
Cross’s voice came through the speaker.
“She separated the key.”
Marlow increased the IV flow.
Julian’s breathing slowed.
Natalie raised both hands.
“Stop.”
“Where is the strip?”
“Safe.”
“Then he dies confused.”
Julian looked toward Natalie.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
She stepped closer.
“You already said that.”
“I don’t remember.”
The words revealed the drug’s effect.
Marlow was erasing sequence, weakening recall, turning testimony into uncertainty.
Natalie reached into her sleeve and showed the metallic strip.
Cross entered the room.
For the first time, she saw hunger in his face.
Not anger.
Possession.
He held out his hand.
“Give it to me.”
Natalie asked, “What does it open?”
“The inheritance Victoria never deserved.”
“Whose inheritance?”
May you like
Cross smiled.
“Yours.”
