Chapter 24 - THE ISLAND OF THE LIVING DEAD

Federal helicopters reached Blue Mercy after sunset.
Smoke rose from a laboratory building near the center of the island.
The dock had been disabled.
Natalie traveled in the command helicopter with Reed, Rachel, and a medical response team.
Ruth remained on the mainland coordinating patient identification.
Daniel joined the maritime support crew because island utility plans used the same outdated systems he understood.
The first residents found near the cottages wore white identification bands.
No names.
Only numbers.
Some believed they were in hospitals.
Others thought years had not passed.
One woman had been declared dead fourteen years earlier during a boating accident.
A former probate attorney had been listed as missing.
A Blackwell spouse from the Bell Room files sat beneath a tree repeating that she had signed nothing.
Evelyn was found in the records building.
She had been abducted from a rehabilitation facility six months earlier.
Her advisory-board appearances after that had been conducted by prerecorded video and carefully controlled calls.
The woman Natalie thought was recovering at home had been imprisoned.
Evelyn gripped Natalie’s hand.
“Marlow is evacuating the lower ward.”
“Where?”
“Submarine dock.”
The island had no submarine listed.
Daniel found an old desalination tunnel connected to a submerged loading chamber.
Marlow planned to move selected witnesses through the water.
Reed’s teams entered the lower ward.
Rows of treatment rooms held patients under sedation.
Files identified them as “continuity subjects.”
Some had undergone years of memory manipulation.
One room contained wedding photographs.
Different brides.
Different wealthy families.
Different women later declared unstable.
The Blackwells were not unique.
Cross and Marlow sold the system to dynasties across the country.
Natalie found a file labeled FAIRCHILD, N.
It contained a projected treatment plan prepared before her wedding.
Phase one: isolate from parents.
Phase two: challenge professional competence.
Phase three: induce public instability.
Phase four: conservatorship.
Phase five: asset stewardship.
The pool humiliation had not been part of the formal plan.
Victoria’s cruelty triggered Natalie before the system was ready.
That spontaneous shove ended an architecture designed to absorb her slowly.
Evelyn whispered, “She ruined their plan because she could not wait.”
Victoria’s arrogance destroyed Cross’s patience.
An explosion shook the lower level.
Water entered the tunnel.
Marlow appeared on a monitor.
He was seventy, thin, and calm.
“Ms. Fairchild, evacuation capacity is limited. You may save the patients or preserve the records.”
The screen split.
One camera showed the flooded ward.
Another showed the archive room burning.
Natalie did not hesitate.
“Patients.”
Teams moved toward the ward.
Marlow smiled.
“Predictable.”
Natalie answered, “Yes.”
His smile faded when Daniel activated the island’s agricultural sprinkler pumps.
Water flooded the archive ceiling and slowed the fire.
Ruth had found the system from mainland blueprints.
They saved people and records.
Marlow escaped into the submerged dock with three hostages.
One was Evelyn.
One was a former judge.
The third was a man Natalie recognized from childhood photographs.
Samuel Hayes.
Daniel’s father.
