Chapter 14 - Victor And Claire Could Not Go Back To Being Husband And Wife

Victor asked whether there was any chance for us.

Not immediately.

Months later.

By then, he had admitted the affair.

The false timeline.

The ignored safety repairs.

He had started individual therapy.

Reduced contact with Diane to legally necessary matters while her case proceeded.

He attended every meeting involving Emily’s foundation when invited.

None of that repaired our marriage.

I told him:

“I believe you loved her.”

He started crying.

“I did.”

“I believe you love me.”

He looked at me.

“Then why can’t we—”

“Because love wasn’t what failed.”

That silenced him.

“Trust failed. Responsibility failed. Truth failed.”

Victor looked down.

I continued.

“If you had told me immediately that you left Emily to meet Lauren, I would have hated you. I might still have divorced you. But I would have grieved with the truth.”

Instead, he had stood beside me in the hospital while I replayed false minutes.

Two minutes alone.

Maybe less.

He watched me ask whether I should have canceled my trip.

Whether Emily would be alive if I had stayed.

He let me carry guilt because the alternative was admitting his.

That was the part I could not rebuild around.

We divorced.

Carefully.

Without pretending every year before Emily’s death had been fake.

Victor had once been a loving husband.

A devoted father.

Then he made catastrophic choices.

One truth did not erase the other.

I learned to live with complexity without letting complexity become an excuse.
