Chapter 9 - Claire Refused To Let The Affair Become The Whole Story
Everyone around me wanted to talk about Lauren.
Friends.
Relatives.
Even reporters once the pool incident became public.
A father leaves his vulnerable daughter to meet his mistress.
It was easy to understand.
Easy to hate.
Easy to turn into a headline.
But Lauren was not the reason the pool alarm had been broken for three years.
She had not disabled it.
She had not promised me she would supervise Emily.
She had not told my father it was repaired.
She had not told Diane to leave Emily unmonitored.
Lauren’s involvement mattered because it established why Victor was absent and why he lied.
That was enough.
When Lauren agreed to speak through counsel, I did not meet her.
Arthur’s investigator did.
She provided text messages.
Victor had told her:
Mom has the kids. We’re good for half an hour.
That line damaged him badly.
It also showed Lauren had been told another adult was supervising.
She was not innocent of the affair.
She was not responsible for my daughter’s death.
I refused to collapse those categories just because rage wanted one giant villain.
Arthur approved.
“Your father would be proud of that.”
“Dad hated Victor.”
“He did.”
“That doesn’t sound like Dad.”
Arthur smiled sadly.
“James hated sloppy arguments more.”
That made me laugh for the first time since Emily died.
Then I cried because I realized Dad would never get to see that I had finally understood why he documented everything.
He had not been trying to prove the Mercers were monsters.
