Chapter 1 - What Evan Signed

Claire Dawson was lying against the upholstered headboard when Margaret entered the recovery suite carrying a black saucepan.
Claire had been awake for less than twenty minutes.
Her ribs still hurt when she breathed too deeply. The surgical incision near her hip pulled whenever she shifted. Seven weeks had passed since the boating accident that killed her husband, Evan, and she was only beginning to move around the coastal estate without assistance.
Margaret crossed the room.
Then raised the saucepan with both hands.
Claire barely had time to understand what was happening.
Margaret hurled it across the bed.
The heavy pan slammed beside Claire, struck the wooden bed frame, bounced, and crashed onto the floor.
“YOU SHOULD’VE DIED BEFORE THIS HOUSE BECAME YOURS.”
Claire went completely still.
Then slowly opened her eyes.
Margaret stood over the bed, breathing hard.
“YOU’RE NOTHING BUT A PARASITE WITH MY SON’S LAST NAME.”
Claire looked at her.
No screaming.
No argument.
“Keep talking.”
That made Margaret angrier.
“You think because Evan died you suddenly own everything he built?”
Claire reached toward the nightstand.
Margaret’s eyes narrowed.
Claire picked up her phone.
Then photographed the saucepan.
The fresh dent in the oak bed frame.
The position of the pan on the floor.
Click.
Click.
Margaret stared.
“What the hell are you doing?”
Claire lowered the phone.
Then reached beside her for a dark-green document folder.
She placed it across her lap.
Opened it.
Inside were several legal documents bearing Evan Dawson’s signature.
Margaret’s expression shifted.
Claire watched her carefully.
“You really should’ve read what he signed.”
Margaret took one step toward the bed.
Claire closed the folder.
Held it against her chest.
Then pushed herself carefully to her feet.
Margaret did not stop her.
Claire walked into the hallway.
Margaret followed several steps behind.
They reached the front entrance just as the doorbell sounded.
A uniformed courier stood outside.
“Claire Dawson?”
“Yes.”
He handed her a large sealed envelope.
No explanation.
Just a signature acknowledgment.
Claire opened it.
Several printed photographs slid partly free.
The first showed Margaret outside a waterfront restaurant.
The second showed her entering a hotel.
Then the third.
Margaret in the arms of a man Claire did not recognize.
His face was turned partially toward the camera.
Margaret saw him.
Her hand flew over her mouth.
Claire looked from the photograph to her mother-in-law.
Margaret had spent the past twenty minutes furious about the house.
Now she looked terrified of a photograph.

And Claire understood that whatever Evan had discovered before he died was much larger than a fight over who inherited the lakehouse.
