Margaret continued telling herself Claire had influenced Evan to transfer the lakehouse because of the Vale conflict.
Timeline disproved it.
The deed adding Claire to the property was signed eight months before the accident.
Evan hired the investigator only eleven weeks before the accident.
The title transfer preceded the suspicion by months.
Why did Evan add Claire?
His estate-planning attorney had written notes.
Primary residence. Claire contributed approximately $410,000 renovation capital plus sale proceeds from Boston condo. Evan wishes survivorship certainty and no family occupancy dispute if he dies first.
No romance.
No secret death premonition.
Estate planning.
Then one line from Evan’s attorney interview:
“He specifically said he did not want Claire negotiating with Margaret over housing while grieving.”
Claire cried when she heard that.
Evan had known his mother.
Not predicted violence.
Predicted:
conflict.
He wanted one thing unmistakable.
The home belonged to the surviving spouse.
Then Margaret had spent months arguing exactly what Evan tried to prevent.
Claire eventually sent Margaret the attorney’s timeline through mediation.
Margaret read it.

“I thought you convinced him after you began fighting with me.”
“No.”
“Did you ask him to add you?”
“No.”
