Chapter 2 - THE FOUNDATION

Celeste recovered quickly.
She always had.
By the time the chairman finished reading the suspension notice, her expression had returned to polished disbelief.
“This is absurd.”
Thomas Keene, chairman of Harrington Global, did not blink.
“The action was approved under the emergency governance clause.”
“By whom?”
“The independent directors.”
“They work for me.”
“No,” Thomas said. “They serve the company.”
Celeste turned toward Caleb.
“What did you tell them?”
“The truth.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“You do not know the truth.”
Felix stepped between them.
“Mom, please.”
She rounded on him.
“What does the message say?”
Felix looked at his phone again.
“Temporary suspension of voting authority. Freeze on foundation transfers. Immediate internal review.”
Celeste laughed.
It was controlled, but too sharp.
“All because I threw champagne?”
Caleb’s answer was quiet.
“No. Because tonight gave the board the final evidence they needed.”
Thomas Keene handed Celeste a sealed packet.
“This includes notice of audit, preservation demands, and restrictions on access.”
Celeste did not take it.
“You cannot remove me from my own foundation.”
“The foundation is not yours.”
Her eyes flashed.
“My husband built it.”
“Your husband endowed it. The board governs it.”
“My name is on the building.”
“Names are not ownership.”
Mara noticed Caleb glance at her.
The phrase was deliberate.
Celeste finally took the packet.
She tore it open.
The first page listed allegations.
Improper transfers.
Self-dealing.
Undisclosed vendor relationships.
Misrepresentation of military assistance funds.
Destruction of financial records.
Retaliation against employees.
At the bottom appeared one more line.
Attempted coercion of a federally contracted officer.
Celeste looked up.
“You reported me?”
Mara shook her head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Caleb answered.
“I did.”
The room shifted again.
Felix stared at his brother.
“You started this?”
“I finished it.”
Celeste folded the notice.
“You have no idea what you’ve done.”
“I know exactly.”
“You think Mara will save you when this family turns?”
Caleb’s face did not change.
“She is not here to save me.”
Mara looked at him.
He continued.
“She is here because you built an event honoring service while stealing from the people you claimed to support.”
Several veterans at nearby tables turned toward Celeste.
The gala had raised six million dollars that evening.
Or at least that was the number announced from the stage.
Mara had already discovered that three past fundraising campaigns reported inflated totals.
The missing difference funded luxury travel, private renovations, and consulting payments to companies tied to Celeste’s friends.
Celeste looked around the room.
“You all believe him?”
No one answered.
She pointed at Mara.
“This woman has been turning my sons against me since the day she entered this family.”
Mara finally stepped forward.
“No.”
Celeste’s mouth tightened.
“I asked where the money went.”
“You implied I stole it.”
“You did not answer.”
“You are a soldier, not an auditor.”
“I became one when veterans stopped receiving what your foundation promised.”
The ballroom stayed still.
Mara’s voice did not rise.
“That was enough.”
Security approached again.
This time, not toward Caleb.
Toward Celeste.
Thomas Keene spoke carefully.
“You need to surrender your foundation access badge and company devices.”
Celeste stared at him.
“Here?”
“Yes.”
“In front of everyone?”
“You chose the location.”
For the first time, humiliation crossed her face.
Not fear.
Not guilt.
Humiliation.
Mara recognized it.
Celeste could survive accusations.
What she could not survive was losing control of the room.
Felix touched her arm.
“Mom, give them the badge.”
She pulled away.
“You knew?”
Felix froze.
Celeste looked at him.
“Did you know about this vote?”
“No.”
“Did you know Caleb was investigating me?”
Felix said nothing.
That was answer enough.
She turned toward both sons.
“I gave you everything.”
Caleb’s voice remained calm.
“You gave us access. Then you called it ownership.”
Celeste’s eyes filled with something between rage and panic.
“You will regret this.”
“Maybe.”
Caleb looked at Mara’s soaked uniform.
“But not as much as I would regret staying silent.”
Thomas extended his hand.
“The badge.”
Celeste removed it from her clutch.
She placed it in his palm.
Then she leaned close to Mara.
“This is not over.”
Mara met her gaze.
“I know.”
Celeste walked out of the ballroom with security following.
The guests began whispering again.
Felix looked at Caleb.
“What happens now?”
Caleb answered without looking away from the doors.
“Now we find out how much she took.”
Before Felix could respond, his phone vibrated again.
He read the new message.
His hand began shaking.
“What is it?” Mara asked.
Felix turned the screen toward them.
A wire transfer had been initiated less than four minutes earlier.
Amount:
EIGHTEEN MILLION DOLLARS.
Destination:
A PRIVATE TRUST IN LUXEMBOURG.
Authorized by:
FELIX HARRINGTON.

He looked up.
“I never signed this.”
