Chapter 6 - ELEANOR’S OFFER

The request made no sense.
Mara had no authority in the case.
No bargaining power.
No reason to be trusted by Eleanor Voss.
That was exactly why Agent Cross believed the request mattered.
“You are not going alone,” Dana said.
“She asked for me.”
“She does not set terms.”
Mara looked at the message.
Eleanor claimed she possessed original ledgers, access codes, and evidence proving Celeste directed the operation.
She also claimed she could clear Mara.
The meeting location was an abandoned country club outside Cleveland.
Federal agents surrounded the property before sunset.
Mara wore civilian clothes and a concealed microphone.
Caleb objected.
She ignored him.
This time, the decision was hers.
She entered the darkened ballroom alone.
Dust covered the floor.
Plastic sheets hung over empty windows.
At the far end, Eleanor sat at a table beneath a dead chandelier.
She looked older than Mara remembered.
Not frightened.
Tired.
A silver laptop rested in front of her.
“You came.”
“You asked.”
Eleanor nodded toward a chair.
Mara remained standing.
“Where are the ledgers?”
“Safe.”
“Why me?”
“Because Caleb wants to expose the structure. Felix wants immunity. Thomas wants to save the company. Federal agents want convictions.”
“And I want?”
“The truth.”
Mara’s expression did not change.
“That answer is designed to flatter me.”
Eleanor smiled faintly.
“You see why Celeste disliked you.”
“She disliked limits.”
“Yes.”
“Did you clone my credentials?”
Eleanor looked at the laptop.
“I supervised it.”
Mara’s hands remained still.
“Why?”
“General Reddick needed military validation.”
“So you forged mine.”
“We replicated approvals.”
“You forged mine.”
“Yes.”
The word settled heavily.
“Did Caleb know?”
“No.”
“Felix?”
“No.”
“Celeste?”
“She ordered it.”
“Where is the proof?”
Eleanor opened the laptop.
A video file appeared.
Celeste sat in her private office beside General Reddick.
Her voice was clear.
Use Mara’s authorization. She is family now. If anyone asks, she misunderstood the paperwork.
Mara watched without blinking.
The video continued.
Reddick asked what happened if Mara resisted.
Celeste answered:
Then we make her look unstable. Military people fear scandal more than prison.
Mara felt anger move through her slowly.
Focused.
Eleanor closed the file.
“There are hundreds more.”
“Why surrender now?”
“Celeste planned to blame me.”
“You helped her for twenty-two years.”
“Yes.”
“You forged identities.”
“Yes.”
“You stole from charities.”
“Yes.”
“You tried to escape.”
“Yes.”
“Then fear is not conscience.”
“No.”
Mara appreciated the answer.
Eleanor pushed a folder across the table.
Inside were transaction maps, original signatures, and private directives.
One document carried Caleb’s name.
A memo dated three years earlier.
It showed he discovered Northstar fraud and confronted Celeste.
Beneath his typed report was a handwritten note from Celeste:
If Caleb goes outside the family, release the evidence tying Mara to procurement.
Mara stared at it.
Celeste had prepared to destroy her before the wedding.
“Why keep this?”
“Insurance.”
“Against Celeste?”
“Against everyone.”
Mara looked toward the dark windows.
“You said you could clear me.”
“I can.”
“How?”
“I created the credential clone. I recorded every step.”
“Why record your own crime?”
“Because Celeste never believed loyalty should be mutual.”
Eleanor opened another file.
Timestamped screen captures showed Mara’s credentials being copied while she attended Thanksgiving dinner downstairs.
The device used to approve grants remained inside Celeste’s study.
Mara was visible on household security footage at the same time.
The evidence could clear her.
“Give it to the agents,” Mara said.
“I want a deal.”
“That is not mine to offer.”
“I know.”
“Then why call me?”
Eleanor leaned forward.
“Because Celeste still controls one thing no one has found.”
“What?”
“The Harrington Defense Fund.”
Mara had never heard of it.
Eleanor explained.
Arthur Harrington secretly created a reserve to protect the family company from hostile takeover.
After his death, Celeste gained access.
She diverted part of it into political influence, military contracts, and private leverage files.
Judges.
Executives.
Donors.
Officers.
The reserve contained money.
The archive contained secrets.
“Where is it?” Mara asked.
“Inside the Harrington family office.”
“Agents searched it.”
“They searched the rooms.”
Eleanor looked toward Mara.
“Not the building.”
Beneath the family office was a sealed records vault installed during the Cold War.
Celeste used it to store original ledgers and leverage files.
Only two biometric profiles could open it.
Celeste’s.
And Caleb’s.
Mara understood.
“That is why she forged his transfer.”
“Yes.”
“To discredit him before he could open it.”
“Yes.”
Eleanor stood.
Federal agents entered immediately.
She raised her hands.
Before Dana Cross reached the table, Eleanor spoke one last sentence to Mara.
“Celeste did not throw champagne because she was angry.”
Mara looked at her.
“She did it because she knew Caleb would defend you.”
The ballroom felt colder.
“She needed him to make the call.”
Mara’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?”
May you like
Eleanor gave the answer as agents placed her in handcuffs.
“Because the emergency suspension automatically unlocked the defense fund for transfer.”
