Chapter 12 - Evelyn Lost Her Board Seat
The investigation concluded after three months.
Findings:
Evelyn had not stolen foundation funds.
Had not secretly sold Vale artwork.
Had not forged Anna’s signature.
Had not personally profited from Sterling.
Those rumors were unsupported.
But she had:
failed to disclose Anna’s stewardship status properly after counsel raised it,
allowed donor materials to imply Sterling approval was further along than it was,
continued historically inaccurate founder attribution despite knowing David wanted correction,
and physically assaulted Anna in the atrium.
The board voted to remove Evelyn as director.
She was also barred from foundation governance for five years.
Could she still attend public exhibitions later?
Potentially.
The foundation was not going to pretend she never existed.
Then Evelyn issued a statement to the board.
Not public.
I spent years confusing my work for this institution with ownership of it. I also treated Anna’s disability as evidence that she was no longer capable of opposing me. Both were wrong.
Anna read the sentence twice.
Then:
My conduct in the atrium was deliberate. I wanted to humiliate her.
Specific.
No:
I snapped.
Then:
I used the word burden because I knew it was the fear her injury had already created in her.
Anna closed the document.
That line hurt.
Because Evelyn had known.
Not guessed.
Anna had once admitted to her during rehabilitation:
“I’m afraid Michael will wake up one day and realize taking care of me is his whole life.”
Evelyn stored the fear.
Then used it as a weapon.
Understanding that made reconciliation harder.
