Chapter 9 - Michael’s Final Line Was Not About Money

Anna asked him that night.
“What did you mean?”
Michael was helping her transfer from wheelchair to bed.
“About whose family it really is.”
He looked embarrassed.
“I was angry.”
“I noticed.”
“I wanted her to understand you weren’t some outsider she could throw out of Dad’s institution.”
Anna watched him.
“Dad’s institution?”
Michael stopped.
There.
Even he did it.
He laughed quietly.
“Okay. That was painful.”
“Good.”
Then he corrected.
“The institution Dad and Clara built.”
Better.
Michael continued.
“I also meant us.”
Anna frowned.
“You and me?”
“Yes.”
“My mother keeps talking about family like it’s something she controls.”
He locked the wheelchair beside the bed.
“She acts like she decides whether you qualify.”
Anna’s face softened.
Michael said:
“You’re my wife. That’s my family. Her being my mother doesn’t give her higher rank.”
That was the meaning he wished he had said more clearly.
Not:
Anna secretly outranks you.
Not:
Vale blood owns the foundation.
Simply:
Evelyn did not control belonging.
Then Anna touched his hand.
“You still shouldn’t make every argument into a dynasty speech.”
“I know.”
“Very Brooks of you.”
He laughed.
Good.
Because even while the foundation corrected its history, Anna did not want the Vales replacing the Brookses as the new sacred family.

That would repeat the same mistake with a different surname.
