Chapter 6 - The Secret About My Father Was Real—Just Not What Evelyn Thought

Adrian told me about the threat after:
the wedding.
Not before.
That hurt.
“What did she say?”
“She said your father took money from Harrow.”
I stared.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“Dad never worked for Harrow.”
“I know.”
“What exactly?”
“She claimed Crestline paid your father through a vendor during the Kingsley audit.”
Nonsense?
Not entirely.
My father, Michael Morgan, owned a regional mechanical-services company.
During Crestline’s diligence, one of our third-party engineering firms subcontracted several HVAC inspections.
One subcontractor was:
Morgan Mechanical.
Dad’s company.
Fee:
$46,000.
Market rate.
Disclosed.
I had recused myself from vendor selection precisely because:
family.
Evelyn found the payment and framed it as:
kickback.
Adrian investigated quietly.
Asked Crestline counsel.
Found:
full disclosure,
competitive bids,
normal work.
Nothing improper.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t want this two weeks before the wedding.”
There.
Same family pattern.
Protect peace by withholding:
information.
I felt anger.
Not because he had hidden a scandal.
Because he had decided what I could:
handle.
I said:
“Do not do that again.”
“You were already dealing with the audit.”
“Not your decision.”
He nodded.
“You’re right.”
That mattered.
Then he showed me the email chain where Evelyn threatened:
him.
One line:
If Claire insists on entering this family, her father’s little side arrangement becomes everyone’s business.
Not:
truth.
Leverage.
Then:
I can still make sure you receive nothing from me.
Adrian replied:
I’m marrying her.
Evelyn:
Then you will discover how expensive love can be.
That was why she tore:
my dress.
The wedding was her last chance to produce a scene strong enough to make one of us:
flinch.
But why attack me physically?
Because another event had happened that morning.
Crestline’s board had approved my promotion from managing partner to:
executive chair.
That appointment gave me even greater formal authority over Harrow’s controlling shareholder.
The announcement was scheduled for:
Monday.
Evelyn learned early through:
a board contact.
She came into the wedding already furious.
Then I discovered who told:
her.
A board member named Richard Shaw.
One of Robert’s oldest friends.
And Richard was not merely leaking:
information.
He had also been one of the original directors who approved the Kingsley contracts.
Suddenly the self-dealing problem was larger than:
May you like
Evelyn’s brother.
