Chapter 7 - The Board Had Protected Itself Too

Richard Shaw was seventy-one.
Retired attorney.
Harrow board member for:
twenty-three years.
Trusted by:
Robert.
Trusted by:
Evelyn.
Adrian called him:
Uncle Richard
even though they were not related.
When Crestline’s audit deepened, Richard repeatedly argued:
“historic matters should remain historic.”
I assumed:
loyalty.
Then forensic accountants found:
board minutes.
Kingsley contract approvals had been presented as:
ordinary vendor arrangements.
No disclosure that Redwood’s owner was related to:
Evelyn.
Richard signed:
approval.
Could he have known?
Email answered:
yes.
Evelyn wrote him:
Thomas needs this badly. Robert will keep the pricing under control. Please don’t make the related-party issue bigger than it is.
Richard responded:
Keep my name away from the family piece. I’ll support the contract on performance grounds.
There.
A director knowingly avoided:
disclosure.
Not necessarily a criminal conspiracy.
A governance breach.
Potential fiduciary problem.
But now his motive for leaking information to Evelyn made:
sense.
If I gained more control at Crestline and pushed deeper, Richard’s role became:
exposed.
Adrian asked:
“Was Mom using him?”
I answered:
“They were protecting each other.”
Then:
“Maybe still are.”
We informed:
Crestline counsel.
Independent investigation.
No dramatic firing that afternoon.
Process.
Richard retained:
attorney.
Stepped aside from:
committee work.
Then another email surfaced.
Three days before the wedding, Richard wrote Evelyn:
If Adrian marries Claire, you need to stop treating this like a social problem. She will have access to every outstanding Kingsley question.
Evelyn replied:
Then I need Adrian to choose before Saturday.
There.
Wedding ultimatum.
Richard:
Do not do anything stupid.
Evelyn:
I raised him. I know exactly what he fears losing.
That line chilled:
Adrian.
Not:
money.
What did he fear losing?
His mother?
Family?
Name?
Wealth?
Then Evelyn wrote:
If necessary, I will make Claire show him what she really is.
The wedding attack suddenly looked:
intentional
in a different way.
Not planned as:
tear dress, slap bride.
But she wanted:
provocation.
She wanted me to:
explode.
Humiliate:
myself.
Perhaps retaliate in front of:
Adrian.
Make him see:
“what she really is.”
Instead I stayed:
standing.
Then Adrian defended:
me.
That was the outcome Evelyn had not expected.
But it raised a painful question.
Why had she been so confident Adrian would choose:
her?
May you like
The answer was buried in his childhood.
