Chapter 11 - I Learned to Parent Without Emily Managing Me

During our separation, I had Noah alone every:
Tuesday night
and alternating weekends.
At first I expected Emily to provide:
instructions.
She did.
One page.
Feeding.
Sleep.
Medication if needed.
Pediatrician number.
Then she stopped managing.
The first Saturday I called:
“Where are his extra sleep sacks?”
She said:
“Closet.”
Which closet?
I started to ask.
Stopped.
Found them.
Another time:
“What does he eat for lunch?”
Emily answered:
“Food.”
I laughed.
She did not.
Fair.
I learned.
Noah liked:
banana pancakes.
Hated:
peas.
Needed his eczema cream after bath.
Could not be put to sleep immediately after his last bottle or he spat up.
His favorite book was:
Goodnight Moon
for approximately eleven consecutive years of parental time.
I learned:
daycare forms.
Pediatric scheduling.
Buying formula before:
running out.
Laundry before:
there were no clean pajamas.
The work became visible only when nobody else was translating it into:
helping.
It was simply:
parenting.
That changed the marriage too.
When Emily watched me with Noah later, she no longer saw:
a man assisting.
She saw:
his father.
May you like
I should have become that sooner.
