Chapter 7 - I Thought Throwing My Mother Out Proved I Had Chosen Emily

Three weeks after the hospital, Emily asked me to move out.

I stared at her.

“What?”

“Temporarily.”

“Why?”

“I can’t figure out what I feel with you standing here trying to fix everything.”

I felt panic.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

“That is exactly the problem.”

I stopped.

She continued.

“You think throwing Diane out means you chose me.”

“I did choose you.”

“One night.”

That hurt.

She was right.

“You chose your mother in smaller ways for years.”

Silence.

Emily started listing them.

When Diane criticized:

her maternity leave,

I explained:

Diane’s generation.

When Diane arrived uninvited:

I said:

she’s lonely.

When Emily wanted fewer visits:

I asked:

one more month.

When Mom expected dinner:

I said:

she’s helping for free.

When Emily said she was tired:

I praised:

how strong she was.

When I could have taken more leave:

I went back to work.

When professional support was already budgeted:

I canceled most of it.

Emily did not know that last part yet.

I froze.

She noticed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

Her face hardened.

“Daniel.”

I could have told her then.

I should have.

Instead:

“We’ll talk about finances when you’re feeling stronger.”

The moment the words left my mouth, I knew.

Wrong.

Her expression changed.

“Get out.”

“Emily.”

“You just decided I’m too weak to hear something.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

Exactly the same structure Diane used.

Emily is tired.

Therefore:

someone else decides.

I packed that night.

Not dramatically.

Guest room.

Suitcase.

Hotel first.

Then a short-term apartment.

I cried in the car after leaving.

Not because Emily was cruel.

Because for the first time there was nobody between me and the consequences.

No Mom to blame.

No emergency to solve.

No wife to reassure me.

Just:

me.

And a question.

May you like

What exactly had I done?
