Chapter 5 - I Started Paying Diane’s Mortgage Because Rebecca Couldn’t

Dad’s retirement plan worked on paper.
Then reality.
The furnace failed.
Roof repair.
Property taxes increased.
Diane helped Rebecca with legal fees during her divorce.
Then covered two months of Rebecca’s rent.
Then bought school clothes for the girls.
By the time I reviewed Mom’s finances again, she had withdrawn far more from retirement than planned.
I said:
“You cannot keep doing this.”
“Doing what?”
“Giving Rebecca money.”
“She has children.”
“So?”
“She needed help.”
“Yes.”
“But now you need help because you helped her.”
Diane became angry.
“You don’t understand what it means to have children.”
I stared at her.
Lily was two.
“I have a child.”
“You have a career.”
As though those things canceled.
I began paying:
$1,300 monthly
toward Diane’s mortgage.
Temporary.
That word again.
I also covered:
one property-tax installment each year.
Why?
Because I did not want Diane pulling heavily from retirement.
Because I did not want her to lose the house.
Because Dad loved the house.
Because Rebecca lived nearby and used the house constantly.
Because Lily loved the backyard.
Because keeping it all intact felt like keeping Dad:
near.
Nobody forced me.
Important.
I volunteered.
May you like
Then became furious when everyone stopped treating it as generosity.
