Chapter 1 - The Guard Behind Her

Warm afternoon light poured through the tall glass windows of the winter-garden dining hall, turning the cream banquet tables and brass chandeliers almost golden. Lily Bennett stood beside the dining table in her pale-blue dress, already frightened before anyone said another word.
Margaret Bennett strode toward her granddaughter with the kind of cold fury that made the whole room feel smaller.
“Your mother is gone—and no one here wants her little carbon copy!”
As soon as she finished, she delivered a sharp open-palm slap across Lily’s cheek. It was quick, not brutal, but enough to make the six-year-old recoil, lose her balance, and fall gently to the floor beside the table. Lily didn’t hit her head, but she burst into tears immediately.
Margaret stayed standing over her, looking down without remorse.
Daniel Bennett saw it from across the hall.
At first his expression showed only confusion. Then he realized Lily was the one crying on the floor, and panic hit him all at once. He crossed the room fast, dropped to one knee in front of his daughter, and reached for her.
“Lily—what the hell happened?”
Lily threw both arms toward him. Daniel scooped her up against his chest, holding her tightly while she cried into his shoulder.
Still carrying her, he turned toward his mother.
Margaret stepped directly into his path, her voice hard and unapologetic. “I told her the truth. Her mother never belonged here.”
Daniel stared at her in disbelief.
Then someone else entered the frame behind Margaret.
Mark Cole, the estate’s security officer, had stepped into the hall and stopped just behind her. At first Margaret didn’t notice him. Daniel did. His eyes moved past her shoulder to Mark, then back to her face.
He held Lily tighter.
“Then tell him why your jewelry was found in her room!”
The color drained out of Margaret’s face.
Only then did she begin to turn and see Mark standing behind her.
Lily stayed wrapped around Daniel’s neck, trembling.

And in the silence that followed, Daniel understood two things at once: his mother was terrified for a reason, and whatever had happened to Lily’s mother had never ended the way Margaret had claimed.
