Chapter 11 - The Motive Behind the Frame

By the end of the week, Daniel no longer needed to guess Margaret’s motive.
She provided it herself in a final, bitter conversation after Susan advised Daniel not to be alone with her. Margaret insisted on speaking in the estate office, with the door open and Mark visible at the far end of the hall. She did not look like a mastermind. She looked like a proud woman whose version of the world had finally stopped obeying her.
“I knew what Caroline was doing,” she said. “She was taking you away piece by piece.”
Daniel didn’t argue with the premise. “You mean she was building a life with me.”
Margaret ignored that. “You stopped asking my advice. You were talking about selling the south parcel. She wanted more time in town. Less time here. Less time with me.”
Daniel let out a disbelieving breath. “So you framed my wife for theft.”
“I wanted you to see her clearly.”
“No. You wanted me to distrust her.”
Margaret’s face tightened. “I wanted to stop losing my son.”
It was as plain and ugly as that.
Not greed. Not inheritance. Not a convenient legal trick. Fear of irrelevance, transformed over time into cruelty. Caroline had represented a future in which Daniel’s mother was no longer the axis around which the family turned. Margaret could not bear it. So she used the one thing she had always known best—her ability to control the atmosphere of the house—and made trust itself impossible.
“And Lily?” Daniel asked. “What was your excuse with Lily?”
Margaret’s eyes flickered. “That girl looks at me like her mother used to.”
Daniel stared at her.
There was no redemption hidden in that answer. Only proof that Margaret’s resentment had outlived the woman who first received it and settled onto a child instead.
He stood then, because staying seated felt like accepting the conversation on equal terms.
“You are not going to live here anymore,” he said. “And you are not going near my daughter.”
For the first time, Margaret looked frightened.
Not because she felt remorse.
May you like
Because control was finally leaving her hands.
