Chapter 12 - Claire Also Had To Answer For Slapping Evelyn

Claire did not pretend her slap had been noble.
That mattered to me.
Mom struck her first.
Humiliated her.
Accused her.
Moved toward her again.
Claire responded with one hard slap.
I understood emotionally why she did it.
But afterward Claire said:
“I wish I hadn’t.”
I looked at her.
“You were defending yourself.”
“She wasn’t actively hitting me when I slapped her.”
That distinction mattered.
Claire had stood up.
Mom had moved closer.
The immediate first strike was over.
The retaliation came from anger.
Claire did not hide from that.
When museum security asked for statements, she described exactly what happened.
She did not exaggerate Mom’s movement.
Did not claim a second strike was imminent when she could not know that.
Did not ask me, as county sheriff, to make anything disappear.
In fact she demanded I stay completely out of any official handling.
“You are not touching this as sheriff.”
She was right.
The city police handled the museum incident.
Not my office.
Claire accepted the consequences associated with her own conduct.
Mom did too.
That mattered because our family had spent too long applying different standards depending on who felt justified.

Dad’s letter was about accountability.
If we used it only against Evelyn, we learned nothing.
