Chapter 5 - The Story Evelyn Told Me After The Funeral

After Dad died, Mom gave me a completely different story.

She said Dad had become increasingly paranoid during his final month.

She claimed he thought people were taking advantage of the museum.

She said Claire had encouraged him.

At the time, I believed her.

Why wouldn’t I?

My father had just died.

My mother was grieving.

Claire was asking questions I did not want to answer.

I was working twelve-hour shifts as sheriff during a difficult election year and barely sleeping.

I wanted one version of the world that did not require another crisis.

Mom gave me one.

“Your father was stressed.”

“Claire got involved in things she didn’t understand.”

“There was no scandal.”

“Let him rest.”

Every sentence sounded like grief asking for mercy.

So when Claire told me Dad had asked her to review foundation payments, I became defensive.

“Why didn’t he ask me?”

“Because you were dealing with the county budget fight.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“He said he didn’t want to pull you into it until he knew what he was looking at.”

That offended me.

Then Claire said there might be a letter.

Mom denied it.

I looked at the two women in my life and made the easiest choice.

I believed the one who asked me to do nothing.

That was my mother.

Claire eventually stopped bringing it up.

I thought the issue was over.

It wasn’t.

She kept searching.

Quietly.

That secrecy damaged our marriage.

Not because she was wrong to investigate.

Because she had learned that telling me too early would probably send information straight back to Evelyn.

When I finally understood that, I had to confront an uncomfortable truth.

Claire had not hidden the investigation because she trusted herself more than me.

She hid it because I had repeatedly shown her that my mother could still control what I considered believable.
