Chapter 12 - Saving Emma Didn’t End the Damage

People praised me afterward.
“You broke the door.”
“You saved her.”
“You got there.”
I hated hearing:
it.
Because I also installed:
the latch.
Ignored:
the warnings.
Sent Emma back.
Again.
And again.
Hero is too clean a word for:
parents.
Sometimes you rescue your child from a danger you helped normalize.
That does not make the rescue:
fake.
It makes accountability:
necessary.
Laura understood this better.
She never said:
“I told you so.”
That almost made it:
worse.
One night after Emma fell asleep at Megan’s house, I said:
“You were right.”
Laura looked tired.
“I know.”
“I should’ve listened.”
“Yes.”
“Are you angry?”
She stared at me.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“Our daughter almost died because your mother locked her in a burning room.”
“I am past angry.”
Then:
“I need to know whether you understand that protecting Emma may mean losing your mother.”
I said:
“Yes.”
“Do you?”
I thought.
Then:
“Yes.”
For the first time, I did.
That was the real choice Margaret had always been forcing:
me
to make.
Not Mom versus Laura.
Not Mom versus strict parenting.
Mom versus:
our child’s safety.
May you like
There was no choice.
