Chapter 9 - The Second Key Was the Part Margaret Couldn’t Explain Away

Margaret’s attorney had explanations for:
almost everything.
The latch?
Childproofing.
The sunroom?
Time-out area.
First key?
Household convenience.
Fire?
Accident.
Second key?
That became harder.
We learned both keys had disappeared from:
our house
months earlier.
Not Margaret’s.
Ours.
Laura kept one in a small ceramic bowl near:
the upstairs linen closet.
I kept one in a desk organizer downstairs.
Margaret had taken:
both.
When?
Nobody knew exactly.
But we found an old text from Margaret to:
herself
because she often used messages as reminders.
Make second SR key for purse.
Timestamp:
seven months before the fire.
There.
Not proof she planned to:
burn Emma.
Proof she deliberately maintained:
redundant access
to the locking system.
Then Emma told the therapist something worse.
“Grandma says if I find one key she has another.”
That statement was too specific to dismiss.
I asked Emma:
“When did she say that?”
“When I tried to take the bracelet.”
“What happened?”
“I wanted the key.”
“Why?”
“So I could get out.”
My stomach turned.
The second key was not:
insurance against losing the first.
It was insurance against:
Emma gaining control.
That was the moment I stopped asking whether my mother understood what she was doing.
May you like
She did.
