Chapter 11 - Sarah Did Not Move Straight Into a Perfect New Life
The immediate safety plan placed Sarah with:

Melissa could have:
supervised contact
pending further review.
That did not mean permanent custody was decided in an emergency room.
Family court moved:
slower.
Good.
Children’s Services interviewed:
Sarah,
Melissa,
me,
Christopher,
Carolyn,
school staff.
They reviewed:
employment records,
the nights Melissa worked,
texts,
available childcare information,
the condition of the home.
The house was:
clean.
Food present.
Sarah had:
clothes,
school supplies,
a bedroom.
This was not a movie set designed to scream:
abuse.
That was important.
Neglect can happen inside:
tidy houses.
Melissa initially minimized:
how many nights Sarah had been alone.
Records contradicted:
her.
She had worked late shifts roughly:
twenty-one nights
over four months.
Not every one meant Sarah was alone.
Some included a sitter.
Some her sister.
But multiple nights did not.
The driveway incident was easier:
Melissa admitted locking Sarah outside.
She called it:
“a terrible lapse in judgment.”
True.
Also insufficient.
The family court ordered a temporary schedule:
Sarah primarily with me.
Melissa supervised visitation initially.
Then review.
That meant my life changed immediately.
School mornings.
Lunches.
Hair.
Forms.
After-school care.
I transferred into the lower-paying local position.
Not as:
heroic sacrifice.
Because the old schedule no longer fit:
reality.
I should have done it earlier.
