Chapter 13 - Olivia Finally Explained Why She Did It
Olivia admitted the core truth during mediation.
Not because she became suddenly moral.
Because by then the forensic evidence left very little room.
She said Dad had already told her he would not give her unilateral voting control.
She believed he was making a mistake.
She believed I would block necessary business decisions out of resentment.
She believed independent directors would weaken the company.
And she believed the theater sale had to happen before market conditions changed.
Then came the sentence that explained everything.
“I thought I was finishing the decision he should have made.”
That was Olivia.
She did not think of herself as a thief.
She thought of herself as the competent person correcting a dying man’s sentimentality.
I asked:
“So why cut me out?”
She looked at me across the mediation table.
“Because you would have stopped me.”
“Yes.”
“I knew.”
There was almost relief in hearing her say it plainly.
No talk of protecting the family.
No claim that Dad secretly agreed.
She wanted control.
I represented friction.
She removed friction.
Then Dad caught her.
He revoked the false document.
And she used his death to try one final time.
I asked about the archive corridor.
The shove.
My bruised face.
Olivia looked down.
“I wanted you to leave the gala.”
“Why?”
“Because Margaret was coming.”
That was it.
She knew.
Long before Michael announced the original signer had arrived, Olivia knew Margaret could expose the document.
