Chapter 6 - Olivia Did Not Forge The Signature With A Pen
The truth was less cinematic than I expected.
And more believable.
Olivia never sat at a desk practicing Dad’s handwriting.
She didn’t need to.
The family office had years of high-resolution signature files used for routine correspondence, charitable acknowledgments, internal consents, and pre-authorized administrative documents.
Dad’s health made this even more common during his final months.
Some documents were signed through secure electronic platforms.
Others used an approved signature image under strict instruction.
The system depended on trust.
Olivia abused the system.
The forensic document examiner later concluded the signature on the disputed amendment had not been freshly handwritten onto that page.
It was a reproduction derived from an older scanned signature.
Margaret’s signature was also reproduced.
The notary seal was real.
The notarization was not.
A family-office paralegal named Peter Lawson eventually admitted Olivia told him the amendment had already been approved verbally and that Dad was too ill to complete the usual signing process.
Olivia instructed him to assemble a “clean execution copy” using existing signature assets so counsel could review final formatting.
Peter believed it was a draft.
He created it.
Then sent it to Olivia.
He never intended it to function as an executed legal instrument.
But after Dad died, that same file appeared in the estate records as though it had been signed and completed.
Peter was horrified when he learned how it had been used.
He had not forged Dad’s wishes for personal gain.
He had followed a reckless instruction and failed to mark the document clearly as a working copy.
Olivia did the rest.
That distinction mattered legally.
It also explained why the document looked so convincing.
The signatures were real signatures.
Just not real signatures on that document.
Dad discovered the assembled draft before he died.
That was what he meant when he told Margaret someone had forged his signature.
Not that someone imitated his hand.
