Chapter 1 - THE LOCKED DOOR

The front door exploded inward before anyone inside the Carter house had time to move.
Detective Mara Bennett crossed the threshold with her badge already in one hand and fear crushing the air from her lungs.
The call had lasted only eleven seconds.
A broken connection.
A breath that sounded like crying.
Then one word.
“Mara.”
Her twin sister’s voice.
Claire had not called in six weeks.
Ethan Carter stepped into the hallway with both arms spread, broad shoulders blocking the staircase behind him.
“This is a family matter.”
Mara did not slow down.
“Move.”
He grabbed her left arm.
She drove her shoulder into his chest.
They slammed into a console table. A porcelain vase struck the hardwood floor and shattered between them.
Mr. and Mrs. Carter stood near the living room entrance.
Neither looked surprised.
That frightened Mara more than Ethan’s anger.
A faint sound came from upstairs.
Not a scream.
A weak, broken cry.
Mara flashed her badge.
“Police. Move!”
Ethan caught her sleeve as she passed. Mara twisted free, shoved him into the wall, and sprinted toward the staircase.
“Mara, stop!” Mrs. Carter shouted. “She is confused!”
Claire had never sounded confused.
She had sounded terrified.
At the top of the stairs, Mara found the bedroom door locked from the outside.
A chair had been wedged beneath the handle.
An overturned lamp lay in the hallway.
There were scrape marks on the floor.
Mara drove her shoulder into the door.
The frame shook.
It held.
She stepped back and kicked beside the latch.
Wood cracked.
The second kick tore the lock from the frame.
The door burst inward.
Claire lay curled on the bedroom floor in torn floral pajamas.
One side of her face was swollen.
Bruises covered both arms.
Her broken cellphone lay beside her, screen black and casing split open.
For one second, Mara could not move.
She saw herself on the floor.
Same face.
Same eyes.
Same small scar near the eyebrow they had both received after falling from a bicycle at age nine.
Then Claire opened her eyes.
“Mara…”
Mara dropped to her knees and checked her breathing.
“I’m here.”
Claire’s fingers closed weakly around Mara’s wrist.
“Don’t let him—”
Footsteps pounded down the hallway.
Ethan charged into the room.
“She lied!”
He lunged.
Mara shifted sideways, caught his arm, turned her hips, and drove him face-down onto the carpet. She pinned him with one knee between his shoulders.
He struggled violently.
“Get off me!”
Mr. Carter appeared in the doorway.
“You have no warrant.”
Mara looked at Claire.
At the bruises.
At the broken phone.
At the splintered bedroom door locked from the outside.
“I don’t need one to stop this.”
Patrol officers rushed upstairs.
One secured Ethan.
Another called paramedics.
Mrs. Carter began crying.
Mr. Carter whispered something to his son.
Mara heard only two words.
“The basement.”
Ethan stopped struggling.
For the first time, his face changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
May you like
Mara looked toward the hallway.
The bedroom was not the only locked room in the house.
