Chapter 4 - THE DOCTOR’S FILES
Dr. Samuel Price was arrested at a private airfield two days later.
He carried cash, a passport, and a laptop containing encrypted patient records.
The files revealed a business disguised as medicine.
Price had helped wealthy clients create psychiatric narratives around spouses, parents, and business partners.
He prescribed drugs.
Produced competency reports.
Documented imaginary symptoms.
Then appeared in court as an expert.
Ethan was not his first client.
He was one of seventeen.
Mr. Carter had introduced them.
For years, Carter had represented Price in malpractice disputes. In return, Price prepared medical reports whenever the Carter family needed leverage.
Claire’s file began with one sentence:
HUSBAND REPORTS INCREASING PARANOIA.
Price had never interviewed Claire alone.
Several appointments listed in the records occurred while Claire was at work.
Others happened while she was visiting Mara.
The notes were fabricated.
One entry claimed Claire threatened Ethan with a kitchen knife.
The date matched Mara’s birthday dinner.
Claire had spent the entire evening at a restaurant surrounded by witnesses.
The lie was easily disproved.
But only because someone finally looked.
The laptop also contained video clips from the basement room.
In one, Claire sat restrained in the metal chair.
Ethan stood behind the camera.
“Tell the doctor you forgot your name.”
“No.”
Mr. Carter stepped into view.
“You are making this harder.”
Claire spat at him.
Ethan struck her.
Mrs. Carter appeared with a towel and wiped blood from Claire’s lip.
She never looked at the camera.
Never looked at Claire.
She simply cleaned the evidence.
The video ended with Price entering the room.
He checked Claire’s pupils.
Then he said, “Increase the dose.”
Mara watched from behind the glass in the digital evidence lab.
She had seen murder scenes with less cruelty.
The violence was not impulsive.
It was administrative.
A family, a doctor, and a lawyer building paperwork around a trapped woman.
The prosecutors expanded the case.
Conspiracy.
Fraud.
Kidnapping.
Unlawful administration of drugs.
Attempted financial exploitation.
Mr. Carter requested a deal.
He offered testimony against Ethan.
The offer shocked no one except Mrs. Carter.
She had spent decades believing loyalty flowed upward toward the men in the family.
Now her husband was prepared to abandon their son to save himself.
Mrs. Carter asked to speak with Claire.
Claire refused.
“She wants forgiveness before she tells the truth,” Claire said. “That is not remorse.”
Mara agreed.
Still, Mrs. Carter gave a recorded statement.
She admitted helping lock Claire in the bedroom.
She admitted cleaning blood from the walls.
She admitted lying to friends.
But she blamed Ethan and her husband.
“I was afraid of them.”
The interviewer asked, “Were you more afraid than Claire?”
Mrs. Carter said nothing.
The house search produced another discovery.
Inside Mr. Carter’s locked desk was a folder labeled BENNETT PROPERTY.
It contained forged deeds, draft guardianship papers, and a life insurance policy on Claire worth three million dollars.
Ethan was the beneficiary.
The policy had been purchased six months earlier.
Claire had never signed the application.
The signature was forged.
Mara stared at the document.
Financial abuse was no longer the endpoint.
If Ethan failed to gain control while Claire lived, he had prepared to profit after her death.
