Chapter 4 - Claire Noticed The Yellow Tablet

Claire Morgan had worked as a private nurse for eleven years.

Before coming to Briarwood, she spent most of her career caring for older adults recovering from orthopedic surgery.

She knew the difference between physical frailty and cognitive collapse.

Mom arrived at the center with a medication list from her primary physician.

Claire reviewed it.

Nothing unusual.

Then three days later, Vanessa arrived with an updated list.

One new medication had been added.

Claire did not recognize the prescribing physician.

The drug itself was legitimate.

Used appropriately, it could help severe anxiety and sleep disturbances.

In older adults, however, it could also worsen drowsiness, balance, and confusion.

Claire asked Mom why she was taking it.

Mom looked puzzled.

“I’m not.”

Claire showed her the tablet.

Mom shook her head.

“Vanessa said that was a vitamin.”

That sentence bothered Claire enough that she called the prescribing office.

The physician was real.

A concierge practitioner Vanessa had used herself.

According to his chart, Margaret Bennett had been suffering “nighttime agitation, paranoia, and persistent intrusive memories surrounding her husband’s death.”

Mom had never described herself that way.

Claire asked when the doctor had evaluated her.

The consultation lasted seven minutes by video.

Vanessa had completed most of the intake form.

Claire documented everything.

Then she called Mom’s longtime primary physician.

He was alarmed.

He had not been consulted.

He asked Briarwood to review the medication immediately.

When the new drug was reduced and then discontinued under proper medical supervision, something happened over the next several days.

Mom became clearer.

Not perfectly.

She was still grieving.

Still tired.

Still an older woman recovering from a fall.

But the blankness lifted.

She started remembering staff names.

Started asking for the Wall Street Journal again.

Started correcting Claire about the date.

And then one morning she asked:

“Did Daniel ever find the brown folder Robert dropped?”

Claire knew nothing about a brown folder.

Mom whispered:

“Vanessa wanted it.”

May you like

That was the first moment Claire began to suspect that Mom’s confusion had been useful to someone.
