Chapter 8 - What Vanessa Had Been Trying To Hide
The audit finally explained why Vanessa returned.
Vantage Event Strategies had not simply been billing our family company.
Vanessa had used my executive authorization credentials to push several invoices through faster than normal review.
I had given her limited access years earlier when she helped coordinate a corporate anniversary event.
I never revoked it.
She kept using it.
The total amount was not enough to destroy Bennett Agricultural Holdings.
It was enough to constitute serious misconduct.
Some invoices covered actual services.
Others appeared inflated.
A few routed money toward personal obligations Vanessa had through another venture.
Dad discovered it.
He planned to remove her access immediately and tell me the next morning.
Vanessa learned he knew.
She left the estate.
Then came back because she wanted to stop him from turning an internal family issue into a formal company investigation.
That did not necessarily mean she returned intending violence.
Her later statement eventually supported a more mundane, believable motive.
She wanted Dad to give her forty-eight hours.
Dad refused.
The argument escalated.
He threatened to call outside counsel.
She followed him toward the stairs.
Mom heard them.
Then Dad fell.
What Vanessa did after the fall became almost as important as what happened before it.
Instead of immediately telling Mom she had been there, Vanessa left.
She drove five minutes away.
Then waited for Mom’s phone call.
Only after Mom called Daniel and then Vanessa did she return through the main entrance and present herself as someone arriving after the emergency.
That was deliberate.
