Chapter 1 - The Document Victoria Never Expected Daniel to See

Emma was already on the marble floor when Daniel reached the foyer.

Only seconds earlier, Victoria had been standing above her with ten-month-old Lily secured against one side of her body. Emma, still wearing her gray housekeeping uniform with its white collar, had been trying to step away from an argument when Victoria drove one hard kick into the outside of her thigh.

Emma fell onto the polished marble beside the large cream rug.

“Stay down, servant,” Victoria said. “Even my dirt outranks you.”

Emma looked up at her.

Humiliation came first.

Then anger.

For almost four years, Emma Carter had worked inside the Ashford estate. She had cleaned bedrooms, supervised laundry deliveries, coordinated vendors when the household manager was absent and, after Lily was born, occasionally helped with bottles and nursery supplies when asked.

She had endured Victoria’s contempt because the salary was good and because Daniel treated staff decently.

Today was different.

Emma pushed herself upright.

Victoria smiled down at her.

“Touch me again and you’ll leave wearing nothing but that uniform.”

Emma steadied herself.

Then she took one deliberate step forward.

Victoria’s expression invited her to do something foolish.

Emma did.

Her open hand struck Victoria across the cheek.

Victoria reeled sideways.

The slap was hard enough to disrupt her balance, and because Lily was resting against one arm instead of being supported properly with both, the baby began slipping downward.

Emma’s fury vanished instantly.

Victoria panicked.

Then Daniel appeared in the doorway.

He saw his daughter sliding from Victoria’s unstable hold and moved before either woman could react.

He sprinted across the marble.

Victoria’s grip shifted again.

Daniel dove low, caught Lily securely with both arms just above the thick cream rug and rolled onto one knee with the baby against his chest.

Lily began crying.

Daniel held her close, checked her head and limbs quickly, then stood.

“What the hell did you just do?”

Victoria pointed at Emma as though Daniel had not watched his daughter nearly fall.

“She’s hired help. Throw her out.”

Daniel stared at his wife.

Something in his expression changed.

Emma did not defend herself.

She did not explain the kick.

Did not explain the slap.

Instead she reached inside the front of her uniform and removed one folded cream document.

Victoria saw it.

Every bit of anger left her face.

“Emma.”

For the first time, her voice contained fear.

Emma walked directly toward Daniel.

Victoria moved half a step forward.

“Don’t give him that.”

Daniel looked at her.

Then at Emma.

Emma placed the still-folded document into his free hand.

Victoria took one frightened step backward.

Daniel looked down at the cream paper.

“What is this?”

Emma kept her eyes on Victoria.

“Something she wanted me to sign.”

Daniel frowned.

Victoria’s lips parted.

Emma continued before she could interrupt.

“She told me if I refused, I wouldn’t work in this house again.”

Daniel looked toward his wife.

Victoria immediately shook her head.

“She’s lying.”

Emma’s face stayed calm now.

“You told me to swear it was true.”

Daniel looked again at the folded document.

Lily was still safe against his chest, one tiny hand gripping his jacket.

“What were you supposed to swear?”

Victoria’s face went pale.

Emma finally looked at Daniel.

“That you’re dangerous around your own daughter.”

Daniel stopped moving.

He stared at Emma.

Then at Victoria.

Victoria whispered, “Daniel, do not listen to her.”

Emma stepped backward.

“I didn’t sign it.”

Daniel’s eyes dropped to the document again.

Emma added one final sentence.

“But somebody already prepared a place for my signature.”

And suddenly Daniel understood why Victoria had kicked a housekeeper while holding their baby.

The fight had not started over cleaning.

May you like

It had started because Emma had refused to become Victoria’s witness.
